Contract Film Production Designer information

What is a contract film production designer?

Contract film production designers are creative professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to oversee the visual concept and aesthetic of a film. They work closely with the director and other departments to design sets, locations, graphics, props, lighting, and costumes that capture the story's mood and era. Unlike staff or in-house designers, contract production designers are brought in specifically for the duration of a particular film project and may work on multiple projects throughout the year. Their role is crucial in creating the overall look and feel of a movie, ensuring that every visual element supports the story.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract film production designer, and why are they important?

A Contract Film Production Designer needs expertise in visual storytelling, set design, and art direction, usually supported by a degree in film, theater, or design and a strong portfolio. Proficiency in design software like SketchUp, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite, along with knowledge of budgeting and scheduling systems, is typically required. Creativity, collaboration, adaptability, and strong communication skills help a designer stand out in dynamic production environments. These skills ensure that the visual style effectively supports the narrative while staying within budget and facilitating smooth teamwork across departments.

What are the typical challenges faced by a contract film production designer when joining a new project mid-production?

Contract Film Production Designers who join a project after production has started often face the challenge of aligning their vision with pre-established concepts and existing sets. They must quickly familiarize themselves with the director's vision, the script, and the work already completed by previous designers or teams. Efficient communication and adaptability are essential, as they will need to collaborate closely with art directors, set decorators, and construction crews to ensure continuity and maintain the production’s overall aesthetic. Flexibility and strong organizational skills help in making a seamless transition and delivering quality results within tight deadlines.

DOOR International is a global Christian non-profit who wants to see Jesus transform every Deaf person and community through a relationship with Him. To that end, our mission is to grow and equip Deaf leaders worldwide in evangelism, discipleship, sign language Bible translation, and scripture engagement.

  • Operate cameras, equipment, video switchers, lighting, and editing consols to film staged and unscripted footage.
  • Execute full-cycle video production, including but not limited to set up, recording, and editing.
  • Actively contribute feedback during content planning, especially on visual flow, pacing, and Deaf-friendly storytelling.
  • Collaborate with translation Content Specialists and Curriculum Developers to ensure the end product is high quality.
  • Develop engaging multimedia elements such as animated maps and illustrations, title sequences and intro/outro animations.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Film Production, Digital Media, Communication, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated 1-3 years experience producing and editing video content for Deaf audiences, with strong understanding of signed language, visuals integration, and accessibility.
  • Experience working in multilingual, cross-cultural environments with Deaf teams or international content preferred.
  • Excellent sign language proficiency (native or near-native fluency) and strong written English communication.
  • Skilled in storytelling and pacing for visual learning, with attention to accessibility, clarity, and Deaf cultural norms.
  • Skilled in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, or similar video editing tools.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment for a maximum of 70 pounds
  • Demonstrates spiritual maturity, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and dedication to a Christian body of believers. Alignment with DOOR International's Statement of Faith is required.

This position will be open until filled.
