Senior Director of Software EngineeringAbout the Opportunity
We are seeking an
Interim Senior Director of Software Engineering to provide leadership continuity during a critical executive transition at a private equity-backed healthcare technology organization. This engagement is expected to last approximately
8-12 weeks, with the potential to convert into a permanent leadership role for the right candidate.
The successful consultant will stabilize the engineering organization, capture institutional knowledge, maintain delivery momentum across multiple production platforms, and support the recruitment and onboarding of permanent leadership and key engineering hires.
The engagement begins with approximately
two weeks of on-site work to facilitate knowledge transfer, followed by a hybrid or primarily remote schedule with periodic on-site visits.

Our client is a mid-sized, private equity-backed healthcare technology company that develops and operates cloud-based software platforms supporting mission-critical business operations in a regulated environment.
Its technology portfolio includes:
- An enterprise platform supporting commercial operations, order management, inventory, logistics, and workflow automation used by hundreds of daily users.
- An internal AI platform leveraging modern large language models and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to improve operational efficiency, knowledge access, and quality processes.
The organization utilizes Microsoft Azure and works with a combination of internal leadership, offshore development teams, and contract engineering resources.
The Opportunity
A departing engineering executive has created an immediate need for experienced technical leadership. The Interim Senior Director will assume day-to-day ownership of the engineering organization while ensuring continuity of operations and minimizing disruption during the transition.
This is a hands-on leadership role focused on execution rather than advisory consulting. The successful candidate will quickly assess the current environment, document critical institutional knowledge, guide engineering teams, support active initiatives, and help identify and evaluate permanent leadership talent.

Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Delivery
- Lead day-to-day engineering operations across multiple production platforms
- Maintain delivery schedules, release management, and engineering quality standards
- Provide technical leadership for distributed engineering teams, including offshore and contract resources
- Identify and mitigate technical, operational, and organizational risks
- Ensure business-critical systems remain stable throughout the transition
Knowledge Capture & Documentation
- Partner with the departing engineering leader to document:
- System architecture
- Platform integrations
- Production environments
- Vendor relationships
- Technical roadmaps
- Operational procedures
- Create architecture documentation, runbooks, system inventories, and decision records
- Reduce single-person dependency by improving documentation and knowledge sharing
Hiring & Talent Assessment
- Support technical interviewing for open engineering positions
- Evaluate senior engineering and leadership candidates
- Assist with hiring recommendations and onboarding planning
- Help ensure a successful transition to permanent leadership
Transition Management
- Prepare the engineering organization for long-term success
- Establish clear documentation and repeatable engineering processes
- Transfer knowledge to incoming permanent leaders
- Leave behind a stable, well-documented engineering function
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of software engineering leadership experience at the Director, Senior Director, or VP level
- Experience leading production software organizations supporting business-critical applications
- Proven success managing offshore, nearshore, and contract engineering teams
- Strong technical background with:
- Microsoft Azure
- Node.js
- TypeScript
- React
- Mobile application development (React Native or similar)
- Working knowledge of modern AI technologies, including large language models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and AI-assisted software development
- Experience leading organizations through periods of transition, rapid change, or organizational growth
- Excellent documentation, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Experience interviewing and assessing senior technical talent
- Ability to begin on short notice
- Availability for approximately two weeks of initial on-site work followed by a flexible hybrid schedule
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing software in regulated industries such as healthcare, medical devices, life sciences, or other compliance-driven environments
- Familiarity with Azure OpenAI and Azure Machine Learning
- Experience supporting mobile applications, inventory management, logistics, or workflow platforms
- Previous experience within a private equity-backed organization
- Demonstrated ability to establish lightweight engineering governance, including architecture decision records, runbooks, CI/CD practices, and operational standards
