Contract Developer information

What is a contract developer?

A Contract Developer is a software developer hired on a temporary or project basis to create, modify, or maintain applications and systems. They typically work for clients or companies under a contract agreement rather than as a full-time employee. Their responsibilities may include coding, debugging, testing, and collaborating with teams to meet project requirements. Contract Developers often specialize in specific programming languages or technologies and may work remotely or on-site. The duration and terms of their work vary based on the contract and project scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract developer?

To excel as a Contract Developer, strong programming skills, experience with relevant frameworks, and a solid educational background in computer science or related fields are essential. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, project management tools, and possibly certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate are advantageous. Excellent time management, client communication, and adaptability are critical soft skills for success in contract-based work. These skills enable a Contract Developer to efficiently deliver quality results, meet client expectations, and thrive in dynamic, project-oriented environments.

What are some common challenges faced by contract developers and how can they be managed?

Contract Developers often work on multiple projects or with various clients, which can present challenges such as rapidly adapting to different codebases, meeting tight deadlines, and managing shifting priorities. Effective communication with stakeholders and clear agreement on project scope and deliverables can help minimize misunderstandings. Staying organized through productivity tools and maintaining continuous skills development also contribute to handling workload fluctuations. By proactively addressing these challenges, contract developers can deliver high-quality work and build strong professional relationships.

What does a contract developer do?

A contract developer is a software professional hired on a temporary basis to design, develop, and maintain applications or systems according to client specifications. They typically work with programming languages, development tools, and project deadlines, often collaborating with teams or clients to deliver specific project goals within a set timeframe.

Job description

Full Stack SAP Developer (Remote, Canada)

Location: Remote anywhere in Canada (but you must already be legally eligible to work in Canada)

Salary: CAD $100,000 - $120,000 per year

VersaFile is a fast-growing software company that specializes in building attachment, document and data archiving solutions for SAP, SuccessFactors and other Enterprise Software applications, seamlessly integrating with a variety of document management systems. Our clean core approach empowers enterprises to manage their SAP data lifecycle more efficiently and compliantly.  We are a small Canadian product team that works with Fortune 500 customers in production.

Position Overview

VersaFile is looking for a Full Stack SAP Developer to help build and enhance docuflow, our enterprise document management solution for SAP environments.

SAP runs the business, but it was never designed to be a long-term document repository. Invoices, contracts, HR files and other business documents need to be stored, governed, searchable and auditable for years. docuflow provides the layer that makes this possible, and much of our product development is now focused on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).

In this role, you will work across the full technology stack, including SAP BTP, CAP services, Fiori/UI5, React, SAP integrations and enterprise content repositories. You will help build solutions that work within modern SAP environments while supporting customers as they move toward Clean Core and cloud-based architectures.

We are open to two types of candidates. You may already be an SAP developer with experience in ABAP, Fiori/UI5 or integration who wants to expand into BTP and full-stack product development. Or, you may be a strong full-stack engineer who is interested in specializing in SAP and enterprise software.

We hire for potential and trajectory. You do not need to know every technology listed below on day one.

What You'll Do

  • Build and enhance applications on SAP BTP using CAP, side-by-side extensions, destinations, event-driven architecture and SAP Document Management Service.
  • Develop solutions that support SAP Clean Core principles and modern, upgrade-safe architectures.
  • Build SAP-facing features across the full solution, including CAP services, Fiori/UI5 interfaces, integrations, authentication and configuration.
  • Develop and maintain front-end applications using Fiori/UI5, React and Material UI.
  • Work with SAP content technologies including ArchiveLink, SAP Content Server, GOS, DMS and the S/4HANA Attachments OData API.
  • Build and maintain integrations with enterprise content repositories such as Box, SharePoint Online, M-Files, FileNet P8, S3, OpenText and Google Cloud.
  • Design reliable asynchronous processes, including retries, dead-letter queues, idempotency and graceful shutdown.
  • Work with document metadata, versioning, retention, legal hold and audit requirements.
  • Support the migration of large volumes of enterprise documents while maintaining data integrity.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to improve development speed and productivity while ensuring all code is properly reviewed, tested and maintained.
  • Contribute to internal AI and MCP tooling that helps the development team work more effectively.
  • Participate in code reviews and help maintain development standards, testing requirements and documentation.
  • Work closely with the product and development team to take features from concept through to production.

What Skills You'll Have

  • 2 to 5 years of experience developing and shipping production software.
  • Strong development skills in Java, TypeScript or ABAP.
  • Experience developing user interfaces with Fiori/UI5, React or a similar modern front-end framework.
  • Experience working with APIs, integrations and cloud-based applications.
  • Strong understanding of software development fundamentals, including testing, code reviews, documentation and version control.
  • Ability to work across both front-end and back-end technologies.
  • Interest in SAP BTP, Clean Core and modern SAP architecture.
  • Experience working with enterprise applications or complex business systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and work through complex integration challenges.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Who You'll Be

You are a developer who enjoys understanding how different technologies and systems work together. You are comfortable working across the technology stack and want to understand how your work fits into the broader product. You may already have an SAP development background and want to expand your skills into BTP and full-stack development. Or, you may come from a full-stack engineering background and be interested in developing deeper expertise in SAP.

You will ideally bring some of the following:

  • A full-stack SAP developer, or clearly becoming one. Not an ABAP specialist who stops at the service boundary; not a web developer treating SAP as someone else's REST endpoint.
  • 2–5 years shipping production software. Strong in Java, TypeScript or ABAP, and able to take a feature through a UI — Fiori/UI5 or React.
  • Real interest in where SAP is going. You can talk about what BTP is for or why Clean Core happened.
  • Content/document management experience — repository APIs, metadata models, versioning, retention, migrations. CMIS or any ECM platform. This is what makes you effective here fastest.
  • You use AI assistants daily and know the difference between code you've reviewed and code you've accepted.
  • Small PRs, tests you wrote because you've been bitten, docs as part of the deliverable.

Why Wok with Us

  • Work on a high-impact product with enterprise-level clients around the world.
  • Be part of a collaborative, agile team where your voice and expertise not only matter but can make a meaningful impact on a growing company.
  • Flexible work environment with remote and hybrid options available.
  • Extended Health & Dental benefits as of your first day and RRSP Matching program
  • Opportunity to grow with a scaling company and help shape the future of our business.

Salary: CAD $100,000 - 120,000 per year, depending on experience
