What you will do
The Mechanical Project Development Engineer is part of Building Technology & Solutions business at Johnson Controls. Leads a development team on large, complex, high-risk projects. Supports sales teams by identifying opportunities and serving as technical expert. Conducts needs assessment of potential customers. Leads estimating/engineering, process, and / or financial tasks during project development. Individual needs to able to design Building HVACR systems and understand the costs to install such systems. Will travel with the sales team to customer sites to present projects to customers. Under general direction, participates as a member of the Service Project Development & Estimating Team to achieve department and project objectives. Leads engineering, process or estimating tasks during detailed development of projects. Performs high level analysis, focused on the components of the sale. Supports engineering, process or estimating tasks during solution design or during detailed development on large complex projects. Responsible to establish an ongoing partnership with the customer on assigned projects.
How you will do it
  • Provides technical, process or estimating support to management during project design or proposal phase. Assists as needed in developing the customer business case for the conceptual solution.

  • Leads or supports detailed estimating of projects. Validates assumptions made during project design or proposal phase. Builds a detailed cost estimate and scope of work for assigned projects in conjunction with Operations and Sales. Assists in preparing proposals and other customer communication documents. Utilizes / develops specialized functional expertise as a project development team member.

  • Plays an active role in leading cross-functional teams in the development of specific components of the sale.

  • Performs detailed estimating analysis to quantify cost savings or other cost benefits. Assists in technical or financial benchmarking as needed. Leads in the development of cost baselines.

  • Performs on-site data collection at customer facilities required to perform estimating detailed development tasks.

  • Assists in presentations of proposals as required.

  • Participates in transition meetings with Operations and Sales to ensure project scope and objectives, timeline and customer requirements are properly understood.

Other Duties:
  • Uses standard Johnson Controls estimating and development processes and tools in performing tasks

  • Develops and maintains relationships with suppliers and vendors as well as facility mid-level technical managers.

  • Responsible for remaining current with relevant estimating and development standards and practices

  • May provide post-contract design review support

  • May provide job cost analysis

  • Participates in relevant professional organizations

  • Works to secure relevant professional certifications and licenses (e.g., Professional Engineering license)

  • Responsible for the promotion and adherence of Johnson Controls safety policies

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

What we look for
  • Bachelor's degree in business, engineering or a related field as appropriate.

  • Six years of experience in building systems or operational processes.

  • Entry level function-specific licenses or certifications preferred (e.g., Fundamental of Engineering Certification for Engineering related roles, etc.)

  • Experience in design build construction and HVAC highly preferred.

  • Possess strong analytical capabilities and ability to manage tasks associated with development of projects. Fully competent in analysis and assessment of facility systems.

  • Works effectively in team settings and displays leadership.

  • Has good written and verbal communication skills and is comfortable working in customer-facing situations.

  • Solid computer skills, including an understanding of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and MS Project.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $89,000 to $134,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience,
knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market
data.) This role offers a competitive Bonus plan that will take into account individual, group,
and corporate performance. This position includes a competitive benefits package. The
posted salary range reflects the target compensation for this role. However, we recognize
