What is a Contract Databricks Developer?

A Contract Databricks Developer is a data engineering professional hired on a temporary or project basis to develop, optimize, and maintain data pipelines and analytics solutions using the Databricks platform. They work with cloud data technologies, Spark, and big data frameworks to support organizations in managing large-scale data processing and analytics tasks. Their responsibilities often include building ETL workflows, collaborating with data scientists, and ensuring data quality and performance in data-driven projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Databricks developers when starting a new project?

As a Contract Databricks Developer joining a new project, you may encounter challenges such as quickly understanding the existing data architecture, adapting to the client's specific workflow, and ensuring seamless integration with their cloud infrastructure (often Azure or AWS). You’ll also need to align with established data governance and security protocols while collaborating with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders. Effective communication and proactive documentation are key to overcoming these hurdles and delivering value efficiently within the contract period.

Work EnvironmentProject-based, often remote, with a focus on Databricks environmentsVaries from in-house teams to consulting, working on large-scale data systems

While both roles require expertise in data processing and cloud platforms, a Contract Databricks Developer specializes in building data solutions specifically within the Databricks environment, whereas a Data Engineer has a broader scope in designing and managing overall data infrastructure across various tools and platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Databricks Developer?

To excel as a Contract Databricks Developer, you need strong expertise in data engineering, big data analytics, and proficiency in programming languages like Python or Scala, typically backed by relevant experience or a degree in computer science. Familiarity with Databricks, Apache Spark, cloud platforms (such as Azure or AWS), and certifications like Databricks Certified Associate Developer are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you collaborate with clients and teams to deliver tailored data solutions. These competencies are crucial for building scalable data pipelines and efficiently managing large datasets in dynamic project environments.

Job description

Position Summary
State Street's Legal Department is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Legal Data Engineering to join Legal Operations. This role is responsible for the engineering and operational reliability of Legal data products and platforms, including data pipelines, integrations, data models, and technical issue management.
The AVP partners closely with Technology and Legal stakeholders and works alongside the Legal Data Controller to ensure Legal data is accurate and that corrective actions and safeguards are implemented to maintain data quality. The role operates with a high degree of autonomy and supports enterprise governance expectations through robust engineering practices and well-controlled operational processes.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and support Legal data pipelines and integrations (ingestion, transformation, validation, and publishing), ensuring reliable upstream/downstream dependencies.
  • Develop and maintain data models, metadata standards, and reusable data assets to support reporting, analytics, and operational use cases.
  • Support ad hoc reporting requests by producing reliable datasets/outputs and partnering with stakeholders to clarify requirements and validate results.
  • Implement data quality controls (automated checks, monitoring, alerting) and partner with data owners to resolve root causes.
  • Partner with Technology to align on architecture, security, access patterns, and operational support models.
  • Support release management for platform changes (testing coordination, deployment readiness, and post-release verification).
  • Prepare Legal data for AI use cases by curating training/feature datasets, standardizing metadata, and ensuring data is usable for tagging, classification, and search experiences.
  • Build and run AI-enabled pipelines (where applicable) to support automated tagging, classification, and enrichment of Legal content and contract metadata, partnering with Technology and model owners to operationalize outputs.

Qualifications
Required
  • Master's degree or equivalent advanced professional experience is required.
  • Experience building and supporting data pipelines, integrations, or data products in an enterprise environment.
  • Knowledge of Databricks (e.g., notebooks, jobs/workflows, Delta Lake concepts) and how it is used to build and operate data pipelines.
  • Deep understanding of relational databases and data modeling, including strong SQL skills and familiarity with OData concepts/patterns.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex data/platform issues and drive root-cause resolution with Technology partners.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills; ability to operate autonomously and manage multiple priorities.

Preferred
  • Experience with Legal systems, contract repositories, or contract lifecycle management (CLM) platforms.
  • Familiarity with data governance, operational control frameworks, and audit/regulatory expectations.
  • Experience with data quality tooling, monitoring/alerting patterns, and batch/near-real-time processing concepts.
  • Experience translating business requirements into technical designs and partnering effectively across Legal, Risk, Compliance, and Technology.
  • Data visualization skills and/or UI/UX design experience to improve usability of data products, dashboards, or end-user experiences.
