Job Title: HVAC Controls Service Technician

Job Description

Seeking a motivated and dependable HVAC Controls Service Technician with 2+ years of experience who is ready to grow into advanced roles in building automation, energy management, and smart facility systems in the greater Kalamazoo and West Michigan area. This role focuses on servicing, troubleshooting, and optimizing building automation and controls systems while providing professional, customer-focused support to a diverse range of facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, service, and optimize Building Automation Systems (BAS/DDC) to ensure reliable and efficient operation.
  • Perform diagnostics and corrective actions on Niagara, Johnson Controls, and Distech control systems.
  • Modify control logic, sequences, and programming as needed, either independently or with support from senior team members.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and fellow technicians to deliver high-quality solutions and successful project outcomes.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service with professionalism, clear communication, and thorough follow-through on all service activities.
  • Identify issues in HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and low-voltage systems related to controls and recommend appropriate corrective measures.
  • Utilize software tools to troubleshoot control systems, interpret system data, and implement improvements.
  • Support ongoing maintenance and upgrades of building automation and energy management systems to enhance performance and occupant comfort.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 2+ years of hands-on experience with HVAC controls or BAS/DDC systems.
  • Working knowledge of Niagara Tridium (including Niagara AX), Johnson Controls, or Distech control platforms.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems and control strategies, including how mechanical and electrical components interact within building automation.
  • Familiarity with low-voltage wiring, sensors, actuators, and controllers used in building automation and HVAC control systems.
  • Ability to perform troubleshooting on HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and low-voltage systems as they relate to controls.
  • Competence in software-based troubleshooting for building automation systems.
  • Experience working with low-voltage systems and related hardware in construction or building services environments.

Work Environment

This role primarily supports projects in West Michigan, with most work located locally or within approximately a two-hour drive from the home base. The technician should be willing to travel up to two hours one way to job sites, with the first hour considered commute time and additional travel compensated. The typical work schedule is approximately 40–45 hours per week, providing consistent and stable workload supported by a strong backlog of repeat and referral business. You will work on a variety of facility types, including healthcare, K-12 schools, commercial buildings, and multi-family properties, gaining broad exposure to different building systems and technologies. The environment is team-oriented, with experienced professionals available to mentor newer technicians and help them build a long-term career path in building automation and smart facility systems.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $50.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
