Job description

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY:

ONeill Contractors is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned and Woman-Owned Small Business with nearly two decades of federal past performance, and we are in a deliberate growth phase.

We are hiring our Controller. This is the senior financial role in the company and the person who owns how we account for our work — not a seat inside someone else’s system, but the person who builds and runs it.

You will have real autonomy and direct access to ownership from day one. You will also be building things that do not exist yet. If you want a role where the processes are already written and your job is to maintain them, this is not it. If you want to put your name on the financial infrastructure of a growing federal contractor, read on.

WHY THIS ROLE IS DIFFERENT:

•      You will own the whole picture, not a slice. Job cost, WIP, cash flow, bonding, insurance, financial reporting, and policy — all of it runs through you.

•      Federal work is genuinely different, and you will learn it deeply. FAR-compliant job cost accounting, indirect rate structures, and audit-ready books are specialized skills that make you more valuable every year you hold them.

•      Joint venture accounting. We operate an SBA Mentor-Protégé joint venture with separate books, member distributions, and work-share allocations. It is analytically interesting work that most controllers never touch.

•      A clear path up. We are targeting substantial growth in annual contract awards over the next five years. The person who builds the financial function that supports that growth is the natural candidate to lead it as CFO or Director of Finance.

•      Member  of the Executive Management Team. No layers. Your recommendations get heard and acted on, and you will be in the room when they are decided.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Own the accounting function

•      Run all accounting operations for the company, including the monthly close and the preparation of all monthly financial reports.

•      Supervise, develop, and hold accountable the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable staff and functions.

•      Manage and forecast company cash flow, with the visibility and lead time that lets leadership make decisions early rather than reactively.

•      Coordinate with our outside accounting and financial firms on monthly close-out procedures, quarterly reporting, and year-end review and tax returns.

Partner with operations

•      Work directly with Project Managers on bonding, insurance, contract agreements, and the financial mechanics of their projects.

•      Review and analyze job cost estimates and reports monthly, including work-in-process schedules, and raise issues to project teams and leadership before they become write-downs.

•      Make sure the field and the office are following the same accounting procedures — which means writing those procedures in plain language and then actually driving adoption.

Build for growth

•      Participate in the formation and implementation of company financial plans.

•      Design new accounting and operational procedures to support a growing company and an evolving business structure, including joint venture entities.

•      Provide reporting, budgeting, and analysis for senior management, including special reports that identify trends and inform strategy.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Required

•      Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.

•      Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, with at least two in a role where you owned outcomes rather than executing tasks.

•      Direct experience with job cost accounting and financial reporting, including work-in-process schedules. This is non-negotiable — WIP judgment is the core of the job.

•      Experience in construction, whether with a general contractor, a construction manager, or a subcontractor.

•      Experience leading and managing accounting or financial personnel a plus.

•      A working understanding of commercial insurance policies as they apply to construction.

•      Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, and the communication skills to clearly explain a financial position .

STRONGLY PREFERRED

•      CPA license.

•      Federal or government contracting experience, including FAR-compliant cost accounting and DCAA audit readiness.

•      Acumatica Construction Edition experience. We run Acumatica. Experience with other construction ERPs (Sage, Viewpoint, Foundation, CMiC) plus a willingness to learn ours is also welcome.

•      Joint venture or multi-entity accounting experience.

HOW TO APPLY

Send us your resume and a brief note about your construction accounting background. If you hve run a WIP schedule that caught a problem before it hit the income statement, tell us that story as well.
