Job description

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring an Electronics Engineering Technologist within the Engineering division. This position will support operations at the 88-Inch Cyclotron, a key experimental user facility for nuclear science and applied physics research. 

The Electronics Engineering Technologist will perform wide-range technical support in the field of electronics fabrication and installation in an accelerator environment. Layout, fabricate and install a broad variety of general electronics hardware, including chassis fabrication, wiring, cabling, printed circuit board loading and equipment installation. Perform measurements and calculations necessary to achieve desired results.

You will:

  • Fabricate and/or install complex electronics hardware including chassis, instruments, printed circuit boards, cables, wiring harnesses, equipment racks and consoles, and control and instrumentation inter-connect cabling systems. 
  • Operate hand, power and machine tools of the trade. 
  • Read and interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, and component layout diagrams. 
  • Follow generalized written or verbal instructions. Select appropriate components, packaging enclosures and manufacturing techniques and procedures. Implement appropriate codes and standards associated with the trade. 
  • Interact with engineers, designers and electronics coordinators on matters relating to finished product design, technical performance and documentation criteria. Provide input to cost estimates and production/installation scheduling. 
  • Perform all duties in compliance with applicable Environment, Health and Safety rules and regulations as described in LBL Pub-3000 and other related documents. Proactively promote and participate in matters relating to safety and environmentally sensitive work practices. 
  • Participate in various formal ES&H training activities as required by specific duties and responsibilities. 
  • Support Lab-wide and Engineering Division Workplace goals. Be sensitive to the needs of all employees and contribute to the establishment and maintenance of a nurturing work environment. 

Requirements:

Level 2:

  • Understanding of electronics fabrication and installation techniques, procedures, codes and quality standards. 
  • Work experience in fabricating and installing the full spectrum of general electronics hardware and systems. 
  • Ability to successfully accomplish assignments under only general guidance and limited supervision. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to use appropriate hand power and machine tools of the trade. 
  • Ability to perform design layouts requiring general measurements and calculations. 
  • Ability to read and correctly interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, and component layout diagrams. 
  • Color vision sufficient to discern wiring and component color codes, and safety related colored signs, lamps and warning devices. 
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.). 

In addition to the above, level 3:

  • Minimum of 4-6 years of related work experience in performing advanced technical support in the field of electronics test, maintenance and development.
  • Advanced understanding of electronics theory, electro-mechanical, scientific principles, and mathematics.
  • Experience and ability to use complex test equipment, diagnostic routines and procedures and appropriate hand, and power tools of the trade.
  • Experience operating a variety of electronics test equipment including oscilloscopes, digital and analog multimeters, function generators and pulse generators.

Desired skills/knowledge:

Level 2:

  • High school/ trade school courses, military experience in tool usage, soldering, blueprint / schematic reading, and general AC and DC circuit theory. 
  • Computer-Aided electronics drafting and design-documentation skills. Visio, OmniGraffle, draw.io 
  • General personal computer application skills with Google Workspace or MS Office. 
  • Planning, mentoring, organizing and writing skills. 

In addition to the above, level 3:

  • AA Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Science or Computer Technology or the equivalent in formal military or industrial training.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of ALS Radiation Protective Interlock Systems. Ability to Execute detailed procedures and repairs to ensure personnel are provided adequate protection against radiation hazards.
  • Broad knowledge of high voltage and high current power supplies and RF systems.
  • General electronics drafting and design-documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E electrical safety work practices.

Additional information:

  • Appointment type: This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid), eligible for overtime pay.
  • Salary range: 
    • Level 2: The expected hourly range for the Electronics Engineering Technologist position is $40.90 - $49.18, which fits into the full hourly range of $36.77 - $53.32 depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.  
    • Level 3: The expected hourly range for the Electronics Engineering Technologist position is $49.72 - $59.77, which fits into the full hourly range of $44.69 - $64.79 depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.  
  • Background check: This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position.
