What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract CNC Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract CNC Programmer, you need strong proficiency in CNC machine operation, G-code programming, and a background in mechanical engineering or machining. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360, as well as knowledge of various CNC controllers, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure precise production and collaboration with manufacturing teams. These capabilities are crucial for delivering high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective machining solutions in a dynamic contract environment.

What are some common challenges faced by contract CNC programmers when joining new client projects?

Contract CNC programmers often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to unfamiliar machines, software, or shop floor processes used by different clients. They may need to rapidly interpret varying technical drawings and specifications, while also aligning with each shop's unique workflow and safety standards. Building rapport with permanent team members and understanding client expectations are crucial for delivering effective solutions on tight timelines. Flexibility, clear communication, and a solid foundation in CNC programming principles help contract professionals overcome these hurdles.

What is contract CNC programming?

Contract CNC programming involves hiring a specialist or company on a contractual basis to create, optimize, or modify CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine code. These professionals develop programs that guide machines like mills, lathes, and routers to produce precise parts according to engineering drawings or CAD files. Contract CNC programmers are often brought in for specific projects, to handle overflow work, or to provide expertise in complex machining tasks. This flexible arrangement helps manufacturers access skilled programmers without committing to a full-time hire.

What is the difference between Contract Cnc Programming vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectContract Cnc ProgrammingCnc Machinist
CredentialsTypically requires CNC programming certifications or experience with CAD/CAM softwareRequires CNC machine operation experience, often with certifications in machine operation
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based for programming, on-site for setup and testingPrimarily on the shop floor operating machines
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing, aerospace, automotive for designing and programming partsUsed in manufacturing plants for producing parts directly on CNC machines

Contract Cnc Programmers focus on creating and optimizing CNC programs, often working remotely or on a project basis, while Cnc Machinists operate and set up CNC machines to produce parts. Both roles require technical skills, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

Job Title: CNC Programmer

Job Description

This role focuses on programming and supporting a brand-new 4-axis machining center used to machine 6x12x24 inch forgings for flight-critical helicopter components. You will translate 2D drawings into 3D models, develop CNC programs using Mastercam, design fixtures, and guide the transition from first article to production by working closely with existing shop staff.

Responsibilities

  • Program a 4-axis machining center to machine 6x12x24 inch forgings for flight-critical helicopter components, using a brand-new NHP 6300 machine with FANUC 31i-B Plus control, full B-axis, and a 90-tool automatic tool changer.
  • Translate 2D engineering drawings into accurate 3D models suitable for CNC machining.
  • Create, test, and optimize CNC programs for 4-axis machining using Mastercam software.
  • Design and develop fixtures that support efficient and accurate machining of forgings that have been rough machined.
  • Set up and operate mills and lathes up to 4-axis as needed to validate programs and machining strategies.
  • Run the machine independently during first article production to validate programs, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Oversee and support existing staff during second article production to confirm that programming and processes are ready for handoff to the production team.
  • Assist staff with work order and router development by providing technical input and clarifications while existing staff create the work orders.
  • Troubleshoot machining, programming, and setup issues to ensure part quality and adherence to specifications.
  • Continuously refine programs and processes to improve efficiency, repeatability, and throughput.
  • Collaborate with shop floor personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and consistent operation of the machining center.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of CNC programming experience.
  • Proficiency in programming CNC machines using Mastercam software.
  • Demonstrated experience translating 2D drawings into accurate 3D models for machining.
  • Ability to set up and operate mills and lathes up to 4-axis.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC machining and general machining practices.
  • Strong understanding of CNC programming principles and machining processes for precision components.
  • Capability to work independently on first article runs and provide guidance to others during subsequent runs.
  • Solid problem-solving skills and attention to detail in a production machining environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with other CAM software beyond Mastercam.
  • Experience machining 5-axis CNC machines.
  • Experience overseeing, mentoring, or leading other machinists or programmers.
  • Comfort working with advanced controls such as FANUC 31i-B Plus.
  • Familiarity with machining forgings and flight-critical or high-precision components.

Why Work Here?

You will work with a brand-new, state-of-the-art machine brought in specifically for this project, giving you the rare opportunity to build processes from the ground up and create significant value. The role offers the chance to shape how the equipment is used, influence best practices on the shop floor, and potentially transition from a contract assignment to a longer-term opportunity depending on workflow and business needs.

Work Environment

You will split your time between the shop floor and a desk-based programming environment, working directly at the machines and within Mastercam. The primary equipment includes a new NHP 6300 machining center with FANUC 31i-B Plus control, full B-axis capability, and a 90-tool automatic tool changer. The standard schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a lunch break from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Minimal overtime may be required to meet scheduled due dates.
