What does a machinist do?

A machinist operates machine tools such as lathes, mills, and grinders to produce precision metal parts and components. They read technical drawings, set up equipment, and ensure parts meet specifications, often working in manufacturing or industrial environments. Skills in math, attention to detail, and knowledge of safety procedures are essential for the role.

What are some typical challenges machinists face when working with new or complex blueprints?

Machinists often encounter challenges interpreting intricate blueprints, especially when working with new or highly technical parts. These situations require strong attention to detail and effective communication with engineers or designers to clarify specifications. Additionally, adapting machine settings and tool choices for unfamiliar materials can be demanding, making problem-solving skills essential. Overcoming these challenges helps machinists ensure production accuracy and maintain quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machinist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machinist, you need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and precision measurement, typically acquired through vocational training or an apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC machines, lathes, milling machines, and CAD/CAM software is essential, as are certifications like NIMS. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help machinists produce high-quality components and collaborate with team members. These skills are crucial for ensuring accuracy, safety, and efficiency in manufacturing environments.

Can machinists make good money?

Machinists can earn competitive wages, with median salaries often above the national average depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled machinists who operate advanced equipment and hold certifications tend to have higher earning potential.

Is machinist a difficult job?

A machinist job involves operating and maintaining machine tools to produce precision parts, requiring technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of safety procedures. It can be physically demanding and often requires training or certification, but the difficulty varies based on experience and the complexity of tasks. Success in this role depends on problem-solving abilities and familiarity with tools like CNC machines.

What Does a Machinist Do?

A machinist is someone who uses heavy equipment to cut machinery parts made of different materials including steel, silicon, aluminum, and plastic. Machinist work takes a great amount of focus and precision. Machinists must be able to read mechanical blueprints, make calculations, determine machine speed, and perform precise cuts to create tools, fixtures, building materials, and other products. In addition to creating products based on preset specifications, machinists must also maintain their machines to ensure they cut properly and safely. This means keeping them properly lubricated and regulating their temperature. In many cases, machinists must have a working knowledge of computers which may help them determine cutting patterns and paths.

What is the highest paid machinist job?

The highest paid machinist roles are often found in specialized fields such as aerospace, defense, or manufacturing of high-precision components, with senior or lead machinists earning salaries exceeding $70,000 annually. Advanced skills, certifications, and experience with CNC machines and complex tooling typically contribute to higher compensation.

What is the difference between Machinist vs Tool and Die Maker?

AspectMachinistTool and Die Maker
CredentialsHigh school diploma, technical training, certifications in machiningHigh school diploma, specialized training, certifications in die making
Work EnvironmentFactories, machine shops, manufacturing plantsTool rooms, manufacturing facilities, specialized workshops
Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, general machiningTooling, die making, precision manufacturing

While both Machinists and Tool and Die Makers work with metal and precision equipment in manufacturing settings, Machinists primarily operate and set up machines to produce parts, whereas Tool and Die Makers design, build, and repair specialized tools and dies used in mass production. Machinists often have broader roles in general machining, while Tool and Die Makers focus on creating the molds and tools essential for high-volume manufacturing processes.

Job description

Every legendary engine and compressor Cooper Machinery Services has built since 1833 started with a machinist who could turn a print into a precision part. As a Machinist III, you'll bring that same skill to the shop floor - machining, repairing, and restoring the one-off parts and tooling that keep our customers' operations running around the world.
This is hands-on work for someone who takes pride in tight tolerances and a clean finish. If you know your way around a manual lathe and a mill, and you want your craftsmanship backed by a company with 190+ years of engineering heritage, we want to hear from you.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Machine parts to spec on manual lathes, mills, and drills, and support repair/restoration of parts for our turbocharger service business.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and job cards to determine dimensions, tolerances, and machining requirements.
  • Perform dimensional layout and inspection on finished parts, completing documentation to confirm conformity to print.
  • Set up and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, and workholding, then monitor feed and speed throughout the machining process.
  • Adjust machine offsets (wear, geometry, cutter compensation) and execute the surface finishes each job calls for.
  • Independently operate and set up multiple machine types, applying advanced trade math to complex prints and specifications.
  • Deburr, stamp, and finish parts to specification, and keep your work area clean and safe - chips swept, oil disposed of, PPE on.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including machine guarding, proper lifting technique, and slip/fall prevention.

WHO YOU ARE
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited school or institution.
  • 5-8 years of manual machining experience, ideally in oil & gas, power generation, heavy equipment, or automation & controls.
  • Advanced, hands-on knowledge of precision measuring tools - dial and Vernier calipers, ID mics, depth mics, ball mics, and similar.
  • Mechanical aptitude allowing you to be versatile and help on the mechanical side as well when needed.
  • Comfortable with a variety of metal-cutting machinery and confident reading and responding to product specifications and drawings.
  • Able to lift at least 40 lbs. and handle the physical demands of the shop floor - standing, bending, kneeling.
  • A dependable, safety-focused self-starter who communicates well, works effectively in a team, and adapts as priorities shift.

PREFERRED
  • Vo-Tech certificate in machining or a related trade.
  • Current certification to operate a forklift, pallet jack, or crane.
  • Familiarity with oilfield assemblies and parts.

WHY JOIN COOPER
  • Most benefits start on day one - no waiting period.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Company-paid life, AD&D, and short- and long-term disability coverage (6-month waiting period on short-term disability).
  • Voluntary life, AD&D, and long-term disability buy-up plans.
  • Voluntary accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity insurance.
  • 401(k) with up to 5% company match - 100% vested from day one.
  • Maternity and parental leave, Arc Fertility Benefits, and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for mental health support.
