What is a contract business analyst?

Contract Business Analysts are professionals hired on a temporary or project-specific basis to analyze business processes, identify improvement opportunities, and help organizations implement effective solutions. They typically work with stakeholders to gather requirements, create documentation, and support project delivery. Unlike full-time employees, contract business analysts are often engaged for a set period or for the duration of a particular project, offering specialized skills and flexibility to businesses.

How does a contract business analyst typically collaborate with stakeholders during a project?

A Contract Business Analyst often serves as a bridge between clients, end-users, and development teams. They facilitate requirements-gathering workshops, conduct interviews, and lead regular check-in meetings to ensure everyone is aligned on project objectives and deliverables. Effective communication and documentation are key, as they must translate business needs into actionable technical requirements. They also help manage stakeholder expectations by providing updates and clarifying changes throughout the contract period.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract business analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Business Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, business process knowledge, and a relevant degree such as in business, finance, or information systems. Familiarity with contract management software, data analysis tools like Excel or Tableau, and sometimes certifications such as CBAP are highly valuable. Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and address contract-related challenges. These skills ensure accurate contract analysis, risk mitigation, and the successful alignment of business objectives with contractual obligations.

Job description

Determined, imaginative, curious-if these are some of the ways you describe yourself, we want to learn more about you!

At TC Energy, we are proud to connect the world to the energy it needs. Guided by our values of safety in every step, personal accountability, one team and active learning, we deliver the critical energy that North America and the world rely on while balancing reliability, affordability and sustainability.

The Opportunity

Our U.S. Natural Gas Pipelines organization is seeking a systems-oriented Business Analyst for a unique rotational opportunity supporting Transportation Accounting, Contracts, and Commercial Services.

The successful candidate will complete a one-year rotation, spending approximately six months in Transportation Accounting and six months in Contracts. The rotation will provide practical experience across the Transportation Accounting and Contracts lifecycle, from contract administration and capacity release through invoicing, revenue accounting, gas accounting, reporting, compliance, and customer support.

Following successful completion of the rotation, the employee will transition into a permanent Commercial Services role supporting Transportation Accounting and Contracts. The ideal candidate is a curious, technically capable business analyst who enjoys understanding how business processes, data, customers, and technology work together.

What You'll Do

Transportation Accounting Rotation

  • Participate in transportation invoicing, revenue accounting, gas accounting, reporting, and transactional analysis.
  • Analyze data and investigate invoicing, reporting, and system-related issues.
  • Gain practical experience with TC eConnects, our transactional system, and regulated natural gas transactional processes.

Contracts Rotation

  • Support the administration and execution of transportation contracts and amendments.
  • Assist with capacity release transactions, customer requests, and issue resolution.
  • Interpret and apply tariff provisions, contractual requirements, and business rules.
  • Develop an understanding of how contracts and rates flow into downstream transportation, invoicing, and accounting processes, in addition to application security and credit.

Commercial Services Role

  • Apply rotational experience to support Transportation Accounting and Contracts with a strong understanding of processes and systems.
  • Serve as a liaison between business teams and Information Technology.
  • Translate business needs into clear process, data, and system requirements.
  • Support the design, testing, implementation, and maintenance of commercial business systems.
  • Use data analysis and reporting to investigate issues, validate results, and identify process improvements.
  • Develop process maps, test cases, operating procedures, training materials, and business documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Business Administration, Business Analytics, Finance, Accounting, or related discipline.
  • 0-3 years of relevant experience in business analysis, systems analysis, energy operations, commercial operations, accounting, contract administration, or data analysis.
  • Fundamental understanding of accounting and financial concepts through coursework or practical experience.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience documenting business requirements and participating in system or user acceptance testing.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational data concepts.
  • Experience with reporting and data-visualization tools such as Microsoft Power BI.
  • Ability to understand complex business logic, transactional workflows, and system dependencies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate across business and technical teams.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, initiative, adaptability, and commitment to data accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in the natural gas pipeline, energy, utility, or another regulated industry.
  • Knowledge of contracts, tariffs, capacity release, invoicing, revenue accounting, gas accounting, or commercial processes.
  • Experience with TC eConnects, SAP, or similar transactional and financial systems.
  • Intermediate or advanced SQL and Power BI experience.
  • Experience using Azure DevOps or similar tools to manage requirements, test cases, and defects.
  • Familiarity with FERC regulations, NAESB standards, and pipeline tariffs.
  • Experience serving as a liaison between business stakeholders and Information Technology.

Working Conditions

  • Houston-based position with a hybrid work arrangement.
  • Occasional additional hours may be required during invoicing cycles, system testing, implementations, or other time-sensitive activities.
  • Final job level may be adjusted based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.

To remain competitive, support our high-performance culture and allow for more flexibility in the way we work, we offer a hybrid work model and flexible dress code for our eligible office-based workforce in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. #LI-Hybrid
