What is a contract backend developer?

Contract backend developers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to build and maintain the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web or mobile applications. They work behind the scenes to ensure that applications function smoothly, handle data efficiently, and communicate effectively with front-end systems. Unlike full-time employees, contract backend developers typically work for a set duration or on specific projects, offering flexibility to both clients and developers. They often bring specialized expertise in programming languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, or Ruby, and may work remotely or on-site depending on the contract terms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract backend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with experience in database management and API development, supported by a relevant degree or proven project experience. Familiarity with frameworks (such as Django, Spring, or Express), cloud services (like AWS or Azure), and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new codebases and team environments set top contractors apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable, scalable backend solutions and integrating smoothly into diverse project teams.

What are some common challenges faced by contract backend developers when joining a new project?

Contract Backend Developers often encounter challenges such as quickly understanding existing codebases, adapting to different tech stacks, and aligning with the team's development practices. Since contract roles usually have tight deadlines, developers must rapidly familiarize themselves with project documentation and workflows. Effective communication with team members and proactive clarification of requirements are essential to ensure smooth integration and successful project outcomes.

Job description

About ALSO.

We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride ALSO—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.

Join us as a Senior Frontend Engineer, Design Systems & Commerce, at a pivotal moment in our journey. As one of our early hires, you'll shape how customers experience our connected e-bike brand online, from the moment they land on a campaign page to the moment they add a helmet, a rack, or a limited-run jersey to their cart. It's a greenfield opportunity at a fast-paced, venture-backed startup, where you'll own critical surfaces, make real decisions, and work shoulder-to-shoulder with a small, highly motivated team.

This role sits at the seam between engineering and creative. You'll be the person our design, brand, and UX partners come to when they want to put something beautiful in front of customers, and the person who makes sure it ships fast and works everywhere.

What You’ll Do
  • Build more pages, faster. Own the frontend of our storefront, the product detail, collection and category pages, the gear and merchandise shop, and seasonal landing pages and continuously shorten the distance between a creative concept and a live page.

  • Extend and steward our design system. Grow the component library, tokens, and page-composition patterns so they act as creative guardrails rather than a cage. Make the right thing the easy thing.

  • Build for self-serve. Architect Shopify theme sections, blocks, metafields, and metaobjects so that creative and merchandising partners can compose and launch pages without an engineer in the loop for every change.

  • Partner directly with creative and UX. Take a Figma file, a mood board, or a half-formed idea and drive it to a shipped page, asking the right questions, proposing alternatives, and making judgment calls on your own.

  • Own merchandising surfaces. Category and collection pages, faceted filtering and sort, variant and colorway selection, swatch and color-contribution logic, cross-sell and bundle modules, badging, and inventory- and availability-aware states.

  • Ship seasonal and concurrent campaigns. Support multiple campaigns running at once across product lines, with clean scheduling, staged launches, and graceful takedowns.

  • Hold the quality bar high. Core Web Vitals, accessibility, responsive behavior, cross-browser correctness, and analytics instrumentation are part of the definition of done.

  • Work cleanly with backend engineering. Define the data and API contracts you need, integrate with commerce, catalog, and account systems, and keep the boundary between presentation and business logic clean.

What You’ll Bring
  • Strong Shopify experience is a must, with deep, hands-on work with Liquid, Online Store 2.0 theme architecture (sections, blocks, metafields, metaobjects), the Storefront and Admin GraphQL APIs, and the theme development toolchain

  • Experience building for multi-product-line brands and catalogs spanning hard goods, apparel, accessories, parts, and merch, understanding how differently each merchandises

  • Proven execution across seasonal and multi-campaign launches, shipping drops and overlapping campaigns without the codebase turning into a graveyard of one-off templates

  • Real experience building or materially extending a design system, including a component library and token system, and translating Figma libraries into durable, composable code

  • Expert-level modern frontend skills: JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS architecture, and a modern component framework (React or equivalent), comfortable with build tooling and progressive enhancement

  • Category and collection page depth, with strong opinions on faceted navigation, sort defaults, pagination vs. infinite scroll, and color/variant presentation, and the ability to collaborate easily with creative teams on how each affects conversion

  • Performance and accessibility as defaults (Core Web Vitals, image and font strategy, WCAG 2.1 AA), built in without being asked

  • Autonomy to take ambiguous creative direction, ask sharp questions, and drive to a shipped result with simple collaboration from Creative, not hand-holding or a fully specified ticket

  • Excellent collaboration and communication, able to hold your own with designers on craft and with backend engineers on contracts, building trust with both

  • 6+ years of frontend engineering, including 3+ years on commerce storefronts

  • Bonus: familiarity with Figma Dev tools, GSAP, or Hydrogen/Oxygen/headless Shopify (including knowing when headless is and isn't worth it)

  • Bonus: experience with the Shopify partner ecosystem (SearchSpring, Algolia, Klaviyo, reviews and loyalty apps), Shopify Functions, Checkout Extensibility, Markets, or B2B storefronts

  • Bonus: A/B testing and experimentation platforms, analytics instrumentation and tag management, motion/interaction craft, product configurators or build-your-own flows, or backend familiarity in Node.js on AWS

The salary for this position ranges from $165,000 to $185,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and location.

Perks & Benefits
  • Robust health coverage — excellent health, dental and vision insurance covered up to 100% by ALSO with FSA & HSA options

  • One Medical membership and dedicated insurance advocates

  • Rich fertility and family building benefits with Progyny

  • Flexible time off

  • 401(k) match

Why ALSO.

We’re passionate about helping the world find a better way to get there—wherever it is you’re headed.

We’re located in the heart of Silicon Valley and have brought together a world‑class team from some of the biggest brands in the technology, automotive, cycling, outdoor recreation and retail spaces.

Together we’re working hands‑on to imagine, design and build an entirely new solution to a global set of transportation challenges.
