Contract Backend Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Backend Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with experience in database management and API development, supported by a relevant degree or proven project experience. Familiarity with frameworks (such as Django, Spring, or Express), cloud services (like AWS or Azure), and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new codebases and team environments set top contractors apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable, scalable backend solutions and integrating smoothly into diverse project teams.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Backend Developers when joining a new project?

Contract Backend Developers often encounter challenges such as quickly understanding existing codebases, adapting to different tech stacks, and aligning with the team's development practices. Since contract roles usually have tight deadlines, developers must rapidly familiarize themselves with project documentation and workflows. Effective communication with team members and proactive clarification of requirements are essential to ensure smooth integration and successful project outcomes.

What are contract backend developers?

Contract backend developers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to build and maintain the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web or mobile applications. They work behind the scenes to ensure that applications function smoothly, handle data efficiently, and communicate effectively with front-end systems. Unlike full-time employees, contract backend developers typically work for a set duration or on specific projects, offering flexibility to both clients and developers. They often bring specialized expertise in programming languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, or Ruby, and may work remotely or on-site depending on the contract terms.

Position Summary:

Summary: Our Back End Developer develops and maintains the C#/.NET services, APIs, and data-processing applications that power our global, multi-region benefits platform. You'll be working alongside other engineers, developers and testers, collaborating on the various layers of the infrastructure to develop and deliver a world-class solution for our global platform. The candidate will interact with the Team Leads on a daily basis, receiving guidance on technical approach and work priorities and providing status and other feedback as requested. This position requires a wide range of technical development, design, and multitasking skills centered around data processing, API development, and third-party integrations.

AI-augmented engineering is core to how this team works. Our developers use AI coding agents (Claude Code) daily to plan, implement, debug, document, and review changes - and are expected to direct those agents effectively and stand behind every line they ship. Code review is a first-class responsibility of this role, not an afterthought: you will be a regular reviewer on pull requests across multiple repositories, including AI-assisted code, and your reviews are expected to catch real defects and articulate root causes.

Competencies:
Develop a solid understanding of the SDLC process. Have advanced skills and knowledge in your domain. Good familiarity with intersecting domains. Ability to handle complex tasks with high-level guidance. Ability to solve blocking issues on your own the majority of the time. Ability to direct AI coding agents productively and critically evaluate their output rather than accept it at face value. Ability and desire to help other team members with problem solving, testing, code review or other requests as needed. Be an active participant in the dev team, bringing forward your own ideas.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain C# applications and services using best practices and patterns - web applications, Web APIs, Azure Functions, Windows Services, and scheduled/batch processing jobs.
  • Design, build, and maintain RESTful APIs (JSON and XML) consumed by web, mobile, and partner integrations.
  • Develop and tune SQL Server stored procedures, advanced queries, and data-manipulation processes against large datasets.
  • Build and support third-party integrations such as SSO, payment providers, CRM, and email/notification pipelines - including understanding and correctly applying each vendor API's semantics and contracts.
  • Use AI coding agents (Claude Code or similar) as a daily part of the development workflow: feature implementation, debugging, test generation, and pull request preparation.
  • Perform substantive code reviews on teammates' pull requests: verify changes against ticket acceptance criteria, validate assumptions against real data, identify root causes rather than symptoms, and provide clear, prioritized, actionable written feedback - including on AI-generated code.
  • Write clear pull request descriptions that document the problem, root cause, fix, and test plan.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the engineering team to design and launch new features, including staged rollouts behind feature flags across multiple regions.
  • Maintain quality, responsiveness, code integrity and organization.
  • Knowledge of code versioning tools such as Git and Azure DevOps.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3+ years of experience working with C# and the .NET ecosystem.
  • 3+ years of experience working with MSSQL Server: Stored Procs, Advanced Queries, and Triggers.
  • Experience working with RESTful APIs using XML and JSON.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding agents (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) in real production development workflows - required. Candidates should be able to demonstrate how they direct an agent through a non-trivial change and how they validate its output.
  • Demonstrated code review experience: able to read unfamiliar code, evaluate applications, identify issues, and articulate solutions in writing.
  • Data manipulation of varying formats and sizes.
  • Experience with Azure (Functions, Blob Storage, Application Insights, serverless architectures) preferred.
  • Windows Services and scheduled tasks preferred.
  • Experience with multi-tenant or multi-region platforms preferred.
  • Experience with Git version control.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Proven abilities to take initiative and be innovative.
  • Good organizational skills, with a disciplined approach to implementation, support and documentation.
