Contract Automation information

What is contract automation?

Contract automation is the use of software and digital tools to streamline and simplify the process of creating, managing, and executing contracts. It helps organizations reduce manual work, minimize errors, and speed up contract cycles by automating repetitive tasks such as drafting, reviewing, and signing documents. This technology is especially useful for legal, procurement, and sales teams who handle large volumes of contracts. By automating contracts, businesses can improve compliance, increase efficiency, and gain better visibility into their contractual obligations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in contract automation?

To excel in Contract Automation, a strong understanding of contract law, process optimization, and document management is essential, often supported by a background in legal studies or business administration. Familiarity with contract lifecycle management (CLM) software, automation tools like DocuSign or Ironclad, and workflow systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing complex agreements and collaborating across teams. These competencies are crucial for streamlining contract processes, reducing risk, and ensuring compliance in fast-paced business environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in contract automation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in contract automation often encounter challenges such as integrating new automation tools with existing legacy systems, ensuring data accuracy, and managing change among stakeholders unfamiliar with digital processes. Addressing these issues typically involves collaborating closely with IT teams, providing training to end-users, and regularly reviewing workflows to identify bottlenecks. Staying updated on best practices and fostering open communication across departments can also help smooth the transition to automated contract management.

What is the difference between Contract Automation vs Contract Analyst?

Job description

About Solaris Energy Infrastructure

Solaris Energy Infrastructure, Inc. (NYSE:SEI) provides scalable equipment-based solutions for use in distributed power generation as well as the management of raw materials used in the completion of oil and natural gas wells. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Solaris serves multiple U.S. end markets, including energy, data centers, and other commercial and industrial sectors.

About the Opportunity

The Manager of Contract Administration leads Solaris Energy Infrastructure, Inc.'s contract lifecycle management function, overseeing the drafting, review, negotiation, execution, and ongoing administration of contracts across the Company's operating segments. This role builds and manages a high-performing team, establishes contract policies and workflows, ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and partners closely with Legal, Sales, Procurement, Finance, Risk and Operations to reduce risk and improve contracting efficiency across the enterprise.

Essential Functions

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of contract administrators and contract managers, setting priorities and performance goals.
  • Own the end-to-end contract lifecycle: intake, drafting, redlining, negotiation support, approval routing, execution, and post-signature administration.
  • Design and maintain standardized contract templates, playbooks, clause libraries, and negotiation guidelines in partnership with Legal.
  • Establish and enforce contract policies, approval matrices, and delegation-of-authority frameworks.
  • Oversee the Company's contract management system (Cobblestone), ensuring accurate recordkeeping, version control, and searchability.
  • Monitor contractual obligations and key dates (renewals, expirations, termination windows) and ensure timely action and escalation.
  • Partner with Sales, Procurement, and business unit leaders to streamline contracting processes and reduce cycle times.
  • Identify and mitigate contractual risk; escalate non-standard terms for legal and risk review.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Company policy, including regulatory and safety requirements where applicable.
  • Develop and report on key performance indicators such as cycle time, contract volume, compliance rates, and risk exposure.
  • Lead process improvement and automation initiatives to increase efficiency and reduce manual work.
  • Support audits, due diligence, and litigation holds by ensuring contract data integrity and accessibility.
  • Manage vendor relationships related to CLM tools and outsourced contract support, where applicable.

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's degree required; J.D., paralegal certification, or advanced degree in business or law preferred.
  • Eight (8) or more years of experience in contract administration, contract management, or commercial law, including at least three (3) years in a leadership role.
  • Deep knowledge of contract law fundamentals, commercial terms, and risk allocation (indemnification, limitation of liability, intellectual property, confidentiality, termination, etc.).
  • Experience implementing or managing a Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) system (e.g., Ironclad, DocuSign CLM, Icertis, ContractPodAi, Agiloft, Cobblestone or similar).
  • Demonstrated track record of building or improving contract processes, policies, and templates.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills across departments and seniority levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team and drive performance in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience developing and reporting on contract metrics and KPIs.
  • Experience in the energy or industrial services sector.
  • Experience with contract automation and AI-assisted contract review tools.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or Lean/Six Sigma experience preferred.

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • Exceptional communicator โ€“ direct and transparent, skilled problem-solver with proven success in building coalitions and avoiding conflicts
  • Total ownership mentality โ€“ proactively identifies and removes obstacles across numerous ongoing tasks
  • Independent thinker โ€“ provides original thoughts and constantly asking "how can we do this better"
