What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract architect?

To thrive as a Contract Architect, you need strong architectural design skills, proficiency in project management, and a professional degree in architecture, often accompanied by registration or licensure. Familiarity with CAD/BIM software like AutoCAD and Revit, knowledge of building codes, and experience with contract administration are typically required. Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help in managing client expectations and collaborating with diverse project teams. These abilities ensure the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget while maintaining high standards of design and compliance.

What does a contract architect do?

As a Contract Architect, your workflow typically starts with client consultations and site assessments, followed by conceptual design and the preparation of detailed drawings and specifications. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders throughout the planning, design, and construction phases to ensure project goals are met. Regular site visits and progress meetings are common to address technical issues, review construction quality, and ensure compliance with regulations. Effective contract architects often juggle multiple projects, requiring strong organizational skills and adaptability. This role offers the opportunity to work on a variety of building types and can provide pathways to senior project management or firm leadership roles.

How to become a contract architect?

To become a contract architect, you typically need a professional degree in architecture, such as a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Architecture, and must obtain licensure by passing the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions is essential, and strong skills in design, project management, and familiarity with architectural software are important for success in contract work.

What is a contract architect?

A Contract Architect is a licensed professional who works on a contractual basis rather than as a full-time employee. They are responsible for designing buildings, preparing construction documents, and ensuring projects comply with regulations. Contract Architects may work independently or with architecture firms on specific projects, offering flexibility in workload and specialization. Their duties can include client consultations, project management, and site inspections. This role is ideal for architects seeking varied experience and greater control over their schedules.

Job description

What Impact You'll Have

Join GRVTY's mission-focused team as a Solutions Architect on a dynamic, fast-paced team. In this role, you will be at the forefront of solving our nation's hardest problems by transforming complex, high-stakes requirements into technical realities. You will serve as the primary engine for clarity, taking ambiguous customer-provided Statements of Work and deconstructing them into modular, resilient, and executable software architectures. Your work won't just guide developers; it will provide the architectural backbone for mission-critical systems that safeguard national security and drive technical superiority.

What You'll Be Owning:

  • Requirements Translation: Deconstructing customer Statements of Work (SOWs) into clear, actionable technical roadmaps and specifications.
  • Component Design: Breaking down complex mission problems into specific software components, subcomponents, and well-defined API contracts.
  • Architectural Integrity: Defining Linux-based software structures capable of running on public cloud or restricted, customer-provided cloud-native infrastructure.
  • Process Alignment: Ensuring all architectural designs support high-velocity Agile development and automated CI/CD workflows for rapid capability delivery.

What You Must Have:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance with ability to obtain a CI/Poly.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Architectural Decomposition: A proven ability to take "messy" or highly complex problem sets and organize them into clean, modular system designs.
  • Software-First Mindset: A background in modern software development with the ability to evaluate the trade-offs between various languages, databases, and frameworks.
  • Linux Ecosystem Mastery: Deep familiarity with Linux-based environments and an understanding of how modern software interacts with the OS layer.
  • Cloud-Native Expertise: Strong experience with containerization (Kubernetes), microservices patterns, and designing for highly distributed environments.

What Would Be Nice to Have:

  • Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms.
  • Experience with configuration management or infrastructure automation tools.
  • Experience supporting production systems and operational teams.
  • D&I Domain Experience: Familiarity with the unique security constraints and deployment challenges found within the Defense and Intelligence communities.
  • Technical Communication: The ability to explain complex architectural trade-offs to both engineering teams and non-technical mission stakeholders.
