What is contract accounting?

Contract accounting is a specialized area of accounting that focuses on tracking, managing, and reporting financial transactions related to contracts between businesses and their clients or vendors. This process involves monitoring contract revenue, costs, billing, and compliance with contractual terms. Contract accountants ensure that financial records accurately reflect the performance and obligations of each contract, often in industries like construction, government, and consulting. Their work is crucial for auditing, financial planning, and meeting regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Accountant, you need a solid background in accounting principles, knowledge of contract law, and typically a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, as well as understanding of compliance regulations, is often required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for accurately managing contracts and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure compliance, minimize financial risk, and support sound decision-making in contract management.

What are some common challenges faced in contract accounting roles, and how can they be managed effectively?

Contract accounting professionals often face challenges such as interpreting complex contract terms, ensuring compliance with revenue recognition standards (like ASC 606), and maintaining accuracy under tight deadlines. Managing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, regular collaboration with legal and sales teams, and ongoing professional development to stay updated on accounting standards. Utilizing robust accounting software and establishing clear communication channels across departments can significantly improve efficiency and reduce errors.

What is the difference between Contract Accounting vs Accounts Payable Specialist?

Contract Accounting focuses on managing financial records for specific projects or contracts, requiring accounting expertise. Accounts Payable Specialists handle invoice processing and payments, often with less emphasis on complex accounting principles. While both roles involve financial data, Contract Accounting is more specialized and analytical, whereas Accounts Payable is more transactional and operational.

Job description

Description:

Job Overview Summary

The Senior Accountant supports the Corporate Controller in owning Minuteman Security Technologies’ core general-ledger accounting. The role is accountable for daily cash reconciliation, the monthly prepaid and accrual cycles, fixed-asset accounting, and assigned balance sheet reconciliations across SG&A. It also owns inventory adjustments and analysis and produces ad hoc reporting in support of the company’s government contracts. Accurate, timely month-end close and clean, well-supported reconciliations are the heart of this position, which requires strong technical accounting, sharp analytical skills, and the discipline to meet close deadlines.

What you’ll be doing (and doing well!):

Cash — owns daily reconciliation of all bank accounts to the general ledger, including same-day identification and resolution of variances.

• Prepaids & accruals — owns the monthly prepaid expense schedules and amortization, and the monthly accrual process for expenses incurred but not yet invoiced.

• Fixed assets — owns the fixed-asset sub-ledger — additions, disposals, monthly depreciation, and reconciliation of the FA sub-ledger to the GL.

• Balance sheet integrity — owns assigned balance sheet account reconciliations across SG&A (prepaids, accruals, fixed assets, and related accounts), with reconciling items investigated and cleared.

Inventory — owns inventory adjustments, reconciliation, and analysis — cycle-count and obsolescence adjustments, and variance and trend analysis.

• Government-contract reporting — owns ad hoc reporting and analysis prepared in support of the company’s government / GSA contract requirements.

• P&L flux & commentary — owns the monthly profit-and-loss fluctuation (flux) analysis, adding written commentary that explains variances against prior period and budget.

• Audit support — owns preparation of audit schedules and serving as a key point of contact for external auditors during interim and year-end fieldwork

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
  • Own It: Focus on excellence in everything you do and each interaction you have with all clients
  • Learn: Absorb the training. Make yourself an expert on our portfolio of solutions
  • Represent: Always understand that you are the face of the company to our customers
  • Diversity: Every project and service call are different so you must enjoy variety in your workday
  • Work as One Team: Work closely with Minuteman’s sales, management, and operations teams to best serve our customers
  • Find a way: Turn challenges into opportunities
  • Play To Win.
What we like about you:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field; CPA or progress toward CPA a plus.

• 4–6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle month-end close.

• Strong technical command of general-ledger accounting — cash reconciliation, prepaids, accruals, fixed assets, and balance sheet reconciliations.

• Inventory accounting experience — adjustments, reconciliation, and analysis.

• Familiarity with government-contract accounting and reporting (FAR / DCAA / GSA exposure a plus).

• Experience with an integrated ERP / accounting platform (ConnectWise experience a plus).

• Advanced Excel and strong analytical skills; high accuracy, organization, and the discipline to meet close deadlines.
