What is a contingent worker?

Contingent workers are individuals who are hired by a company on a non-permanent or temporary basis. They may work as freelancers, contractors, consultants, or through staffing agencies, typically for a specific project or duration rather than as full-time employees. Contingent workers are not usually eligible for company benefits, such as health insurance or paid time off, and often have more flexible work arrangements. Businesses often use contingent workers to address short-term needs, manage project-based workloads, or access specialized skills. This workforce segment is growing as companies seek to remain agile and cost-effective.

What are some unique challenges faced by contingent workers compared to full-time employees?

Contingent workers often face challenges such as limited access to company benefits, less job security, and a need to quickly adapt to different work environments. They may also need to manage multiple assignments or contracts simultaneously, requiring strong organizational skills. Building relationships within teams can be more challenging since contingent workers might not always be integrated into the company culture as deeply as full-time staff, but effective communication and proactive engagement can help bridge this gap.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contingent worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contingent Worker, you need adaptability, time management, and relevant job-specific skills, often supported by prior experience or specialized training. Familiarity with project management tools, communication platforms, and digital collaboration systems is typically expected. Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and the ability to quickly integrate into new teams distinguish top performers. These abilities are crucial for meeting shifting organizational needs and delivering value in temporary or project-based roles.

What is the difference between Contingent Worker vs Temporary Employee?

Job description

*Interview process will begin week of July 13th, 2026ย

Organization Description:ย

The Contingent is a 501(c)(3) venture non-profit focused on sparking and holding initiatives to empower leaders and mobilize community for the common good. Since ourย inception, we haveย leveragedย the perspectives,ย skillsย and needs of people of color and low-income community members to challenge the status quo and positively transform our communities. We askย hard questions. We take risks. And we link arms with our neighbors, including business partners, faithย communities,ย and government agencies.ย

From mentoring, to mobilizing volunteers, to restructuring systems that have been designed to work for some at the expense of others, we prioritize empowering and mobilizing leaders to transform their communities.ย For more information about the initiatives of The Contingent, please visitย www.thecontingent.org.ย

Opportunity Summary:

The Regional Community Coordinator serves as a connector, catalyst, and executor dedicated to strengthening and expanding community partnerships across Eastern Oregon, including Umatilla, Morrow, Malheur, Grant, Harney, and occasionally Union, Baker, and Wallowa counties. This role focuses on grassroots relationship building, collaborative problem solving, and hands-on execution to unite organizations, businesses, faith communities, and local leaders around a shared, data-informed vision for supporting vulnerable children and families. Through trust-based partnerships, the coordinator will increase the coordination and visibility of existing resources,ย identifyย service gaps and opportunities, and help communities develop sustainable support for resource families.
