MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
Current Oklahoma RN license; Oklahoma certification as school nurse Bachelor Degree, Nursing preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 2 years as RN in medical setting; school nurse experience preferred; pediatric experience preferred.
Skills:
First Aid/CPR/AED certification required. Computer literate; excellent communication ability. Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations. Knowledge of medication and side effects. Knowledge of child development. Knowledge of community resources. Ability to maintain privacy, confidentialityand efficiency.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: these statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of responsibilities, duties and skills required.
  1. Coordinates school health management issues at assigned site(s). Cooperates with school personnel in identifying and meeting physical, social and emotional needs of school children. Promotes and maintains a safe and healthful environment for students. Acts as health advocate on behalf of students and families as appropriate.
  2. Collects and assesses health status data as appropriate using observation, screenings, physical assessments, review of records and reports, etc. Counsels with students, parents and school personnel regarding health problems and health behavior as necessary. Assists students, families and school personnel in the attainment of developmentally appropriate health goals through education and counseling.
  3. Provides first aid and emergency care to students, notifying parents, legal guardians or person responsible for student as indicated. Assists in the control of communicable diseases.
  4. Organizes and conducts screening programs, i.e., vision, hearing, height, weight, communicable diseases. Refers students and parents to appropriate community resources as appropriate.
  5. Works with school personnel and health aides to ensure students meet State immunization requirements. Monitors status of student immunizations.
  6. Assumes responsibility for the maintenance, administration and control of medications, including Controlled medications.
  7. Maintains accurate, up-to-date health records and recordkeeping materials, including student accident reports. Records data on cumulative health records and
    interprets per established norms. Makes referrals as necessary.
  8. Assists in identification of students at risk for physical and psychosocial problems.
  9. Keeps lists of children with special health needs and develops, implements and evaluates individual health plans for students with health needs. Participate in IEPs/504s as required. Communicates with physician and other healthcare professionals as needed.
  10. Formulates nursing diagnoses based on comprehensive assessment and appropriate nursing theory. Utilizes "working" or "collaborative" diagnoses which are not solely
    "nursing" in content.
  11. Reports incidents of suspected child abuse according to state law and BAPS policy.
  12. Takes an active role in developing health related curriculum and instruction of students in the curriculum, as well as state mandated health education, i.e., HIV,
    substance abuse, etc. Promotes both formal and informal health education for students, parents and staff. Conducts in-service programs for school personnel.
  13. Provides consultation in the formation of district health policies, goals and objectives.
  14. Functions in accordance with the Oklahoma Nurse Practice Act, Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses, and the school district's policies and procedures.
  15. The Certified School Nurse maintains ongoing collaboration and reporting with the district's Health Services Coordinator to ensure that individual site decisions do not fragment, complicate, or conflict with the overall direction of Health Services and to implement and coordinate district-wide services.

ESSENTIAL BEHAVIOR:
Must exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must keep abreast of
current trends in nursing and of literature in the field of school health, as well as state and federal laws relating to health and social issues. Must demonstrate the exercise of professional judgment in making decisions. Must communicate appropriately and accurately to students, parents, administrators and other school personnel.
ATTENDANCE STATEMENT:
Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Primarily inside working conditions with only occasional exposure to extremes of
environmental conditions for medical interventions.
PHYSICAL STANDARDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to run, stoop and kneel. The employee must occasionally push or lift as much as 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color and depth perception.
