A Content Review job involves evaluating and moderating online content to ensure it complies with company guidelines, community standards, and legal regulations. Professionals in this role review user-generated material, advertisements, or other digital content for inappropriate, harmful, or policy-violating elements. The goal is to create a safe and positive online environment for users while balancing freedom of expression and compliance. Content reviewers often work for social media platforms, online marketplaces, or content-sharing websites, and may use both manual and automated tools to perform their tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a content reviewer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Content Reviewer, you need strong attention to detail, language proficiency, and a good understanding of content guidelines or policies, usually supported by relevant education or experience. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), moderation tools, and workflow tracking platforms is often required. These skills ensure accurate and consistent content evaluation, maintaining quality and compliance in digital environments.

The role may also involve exposure to sensitive or disturbing material, which can be emotionally taxing. Effective management includes thorough training, regular team check-ins, access to mental health support, and clear escalation procedures for ambiguous content. Collaboration with policy teams and open communication within the review team also help maintain accuracy and well-being.

  • Ensure all web pages and online content comply with Section 508 accessibility requirements.
  • Write and revise alternative text for images, graphics, and other non-text elements.
  • Coordinate web content reviews and approvals with FHWA points of contact, web managers, program offices, legal reviewers, public affairs staff, and external stakeholders when needed.
  • Monitor web pages to ensure updates are posted on schedule and recommend improvements to readability, organization, navigation, and usability.
  • Support quarterly certification processes to confirm that web content is current and accurate.
  • Check and fix broken links, formatting issues, outdated information, and other web maintenance items.
  • Use graphic applications to crop, recolor, resize, and manipulate web images as needed.
  • Provide outreach training, user training, and support materials related to web content processes and tools.
  • Coordinate content processes, procedures, workflow improvements, and documentation.

Requirements

  • 5-7 years of experience in web content management.
  • At least 3 years of recent web content management experience within the last 5 years.
  • Experience writing and editing web content, training materials, documentation, and digital communications.
  • Experience using content management systems to upload, maintain, and post content.
  • Knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements for web and digital content.
  • Experience performing content quality control and data/content review.
  • Ability to use presentation tools and provide training or outreach support to staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting FHWA, USDOT, TFHRC, or another federal agency.
  • Experience with Drupal, SharePoint, Google Sites, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or similar web/collaboration platforms.
  • Transportation, highway, surface transportation, research, science, engineering, or technical communications experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with web content databases, online records, metadata, and public release workflows.
  • Basic image editing experience for web graphics.
