Job description

Discover Durhamย is Durham, North Carolinaโ€™sย marketingย and sales agency, generating economic impact by drawing 13 million leisure, business, and sports visitors to our vibrant community. Discover Durham alsoย operatesย theย Durham Sports Commissionย (DSC), a 501(c)3 whose mission is to create economic and social impact by leading the communityโ€™s efforts to attract, support, and promote sporting events at every level. Andย Durham Next,ย another nonprofit organization serving as a visionary community partnership for the sustainable advancement of Durham as the best place to live, work and visit.ย

Weโ€™reย looking for an Editorial Content Coordinator to join our Marketing team โ€“someone who is as comfortable using project management tools as they are sharpening a sentence. This role is the production hub of the content team:ย youโ€™llย own the editorial calendar, keep projects moving across multiple channels and collaborators and do meaningful writing and content work of your own, all under the direct guidance of the Director of Content & Public Relations.ย

Day-to-day, that means drafting and updating web content, writing,ย formattingย and sending email newsletters, drafting ad copy, coordinating with our content contractor and freelanceย writersย and working closely with the social media and partnerships teamsย to make sureย everyoneโ€™sย running in the same direction.ย Youโ€™llย also take on a growing focus on search: using our keyword strategy and performance data to find gaps in our content coverage and help fill them. Ifย youโ€™reย energized by the idea of helping tell Durhamโ€™s story with precision and care, and you know how to keep a complex workflow on track,ย weโ€™dย love to meet you.ย

Primary Responsibilitiesย

Editorial Calendar & Project Managementย

  • Own day-to-day management of the editorial calendar, tracking deliverables across web, email, paid and social-facing content and keeping the team on schedule.ย

  • Coordinate workflow between the Director, content contractor(s), freelance writers, social mediaย teamย and design: routing assignments, trackingย progressย and flagging anything at risk before it becomes a problem.ย

  • Maintain project documentation in shared tools, keeping the full team aligned on priorities, timelines andย whatโ€™sย still outstanding.ย

  • Support quarterly and seasonal content planning by mapping content needs to key moments in the editorial year.ย

  • Completeย additionalย admin tasks related to the work inย a timelyย andย accurateย manner.ย ย

Content Creation & Updatesย

  • Write and update web contentย in our CMS platform, applying Discover Durhamโ€™s brand voice, APย Styleย and SEO best practices under the Directorโ€™s editorial direction.ย

  • Draft email newsletters, adย copy, printย publicationsย and other marketing copy as assigned.ย

  • Translate website copy to mobile app maps,ย challengesย and itineraries.ย ย

  • Assign and direct web content updates to our content contractor(s), providing clear direction and reviewing work for brand voice and accuracy before they go to the Director for final approval.ย

  • Identify,ย recruitย andย maintainย relationships with freelance writers who bring authentic, experienced local voices to our editorial coverage,ย with an emphasis on diverse andย nicheย perspectives.ย

  • Support the Associate Director of Digital Marketing and Analytics with ongoing metrics reporting related to content-related work.ย ย

  • Contribute to content updatesย and collaborative strategic thought for projects across departmentsย as assigned.ย

  • Helpย maintainย accuracy on our database, specifically supporting management of business listings andย visitor-facingย event calendar.ย ย

SEO & GEOย

  • Use Discover Durhamโ€™s keyword strategy and content performance dashboards toย identifyย gaps in our coverage and surface opportunities for new or updated content.ย

  • Apply on-page SEO fundamentals:ย headings, metadata, cross-linking, keyword integrationย to all web content produced or reviewed.ย

  • Stay curious about developments in generative engine optimization (GEO) and how AI-assisted search is changing whatย good contentย looks like.ย

  • Track content performance and share relevant insights that inform future editorial decisions.ย

Collaboration & Brand Standardsย

  • Work closely with the social media team to align editorial content with social-first strategy and extend web content across channels where it makes sense.ย

  • Partner with Visitor Experience team to surface key events for publication across channels.ย ย

  • Partner with design on content pieces that require visual support, providing clear direction on needs and timelines.ย

  • Participate in content planning meetings and contribute ideas that reflect Durhamโ€™s communities,ย cultureย and current moment.ย

  • Learn and apply Discover Durhamโ€™s brand voice, style guide and editorial standards to all content produced and helpย maintainย that documentation over time.ย

  • Help ensure content across channels reflects the organizationโ€™s commitment toย showcasingย Durhamโ€™s diverse communities and authentic character.ย

Experience Requirements and Expectationsย

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.ย

  • ย 1โ€“3 years of experience in content production, editorial coordination, digitalย marketingย or a related role; applicable internship experience also applies.ย

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.ย

  • Strong writing and copyediting skills, with a working knowledge of AP Style.ย

  • Clear communicator who can route assignments, set expectations with contractors andย collaboratorsย and keep stakeholders informed on progress.ย

  • Familiarity with SEO fundamentals and a genuine interest in deepening that knowledge on the job.ย

  • Comfortable working in a CMS platform, CRMย databaseย and a project management tool; quick to learn new systems.ย

  • An eagerness to learn about destination marketingย and about Durham.ย

Preferred Qualificationsย

  • Durham, NCย residencyย or familiarity with Durham as a visitor destination.ย

  • Experience with email service providers.ย

  • Experience working with Asana or similar project management software.ย

  • Basic understanding of Google Analytics or other content performance dashboards.ย

  • Interest in working in aย mission-driven organization.ย

Benefits & Compensation
