Content Management System Developer information

What is a content management system developer?

A Content Management System (CMS) Developer is a software professional who specializes in designing, building, and maintaining websites using CMS platforms such as WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla. They create custom themes, plugins, and modules to extend the functionality of a CMS based on client or organizational requirements. These developers ensure that websites are user-friendly, secure, and optimized for performance, often collaborating with designers, content creators, and other developers. Their role is essential in helping businesses efficiently manage and update digital content without extensive technical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a content management system developer?

To thrive as a Content Management System Developer, you need strong skills in web development languages (such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP), experience with CMS platforms like WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla, and typically a degree in computer science or related fields. Proficiency with database management systems, version control tools (e.g., Git), and relevant CMS certifications are highly beneficial. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate with teams and address complex requirements. These skills ensure efficient, secure, and scalable content management solutions that meet organizational goals.

How does a content management system developer typically collaborate with designers and content creators during a project?

As a CMS Developer, you’ll work closely with designers to implement user interface elements and ensure the site’s functionality aligns with their vision. You’ll also partner with content creators to structure templates and workflows that make publishing easy and efficient. Regular meetings, feedback sessions, and using tools like version control and project management platforms help keep everyone aligned. This collaborative environment ensures that the final website or application is both visually appealing and user-friendly.

Job description

About the Role:

As a Content Coordinator, you'll power BWZ's content engine-the core of our business- by directly producing new content and updates using our in-house AI and automation technology.

This is a full-time contract position open to international hires outside of Canada, with an initial term of 1 month, and the possibility to extend to 3-6 months based on business needs and performance.

We are looking for a contributor to help with the production of new "best software" roundup content to help readers choose the right software, and another contributor to help with publishing software buyer's guide content that helps readers navigate purchasing decisions across a wide range of business topics on our 15-site portfolio.

Reporting to the assigned SEO Content Manager, you'll work inside systems to generate, refine, and QA content across multiple publications, ensuring every piece is accurate, helpful, SEO-optimized, and delivered on schedule. You'll translate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), templates, and format standards into consistently excellent output at scale, while supporting freelance contributors when needed.

Beyond day-to-day production, you'll help evolve the systems behind our content by identifying edge cases, surfacing recurring issues, and sharing insights that improve prompts, templates, and workflows. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in structured processes, loves creating clear and engaging content, and is excited to help shape the next generation of AI-native editorial operations.

What You'll Be Doing (Responsibilities): Produce New Content
  • Produce high-quality across BWZ publications using in-house automations, SOPs, templates, and formats.
  • Maintain strong output velocity while upholding accuracy, clarity, and SEO requirements.
  • Identify recurring issues, edge cases, or blockers and surface them to the Content Manager.
Own Content Quality
  • QA all assigned content-new and upgraded-to ensure accuracy, readability, SEO alignment, and brand consistency.
  • Ensure visuals, CTAs, internal links, and structural elements are implemented correctly.
  • Collaborate with the SEO Content Manager to improve the usefulness and performance of each content format and implement improvements at scale.
  • Ensure content is useful, helpful, and relevant to the reader and goes above and beyond competing articles.
How Your Success Will Be Measured:
  • Content Production & Velocity: The volume and consistency of new content and updates you produce-measured by your ability to meet or exceed publishing targets for your assigned formats.
  • Content Quality: The quality of the content you produce and upgrade-measured by adherence to editorial, SEO, and formatting standards, while minimizing revisions and QA issues.
  Your Skillset Includes:
  • 2+ years of experience in content production, content coordination, editorial operations, or a similar role.
  • Strong writing, editing, and QA skills with attention to accuracy, clarity, and structure.
  • Background in SEO principles and on-page best practices (SEO writing, content marketing, or operational editorial work).
  • Experience working with or writing about SaaS products is an asset.
  • Ability to follow detailed SOPs, templates, and workflows with consistency and precision.
  • Comfort using AI tools as part of a structured editorial process.
  • Experience with WordPress.
  • Highly organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple pieces of content simultaneously.
  Nice to Haves:
  • Experience using SEO tools like Ahrefs (SEO research) and Clearscope (SEO optimization)
  • Experience using project management tools like Airtable.
$20 - $40 an hour
