The Director of Editorial Content Development and Strategy sets the vision and leads the execution of content strategies that advance philanthropic goals and strengthen donor engagement. This role oversees strategic donor-facing communications and collateral, ensuring compelling storytelling and messaging across campaigns, stewardship, events and multi-channel platforms. The Director reports to the Executive Director of Strategic Communications & Content within the Marketing & Communications Department and works in close partnership with the Childrenโ€™s National Hospital Foundation leadership team to set strategy and support execution. The Director partners with senior leadership and development teams to shape content that supports transformational giving and institutional priorities.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree Preferably in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field. (Required) Master's Degree Preferably in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field. (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience: 15+ years in nonprofit advancement or communications, including content strategy and team leadership (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge: Proven ability to develop and execute content strategies that drive major gift, campaign success and organizational goals. Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed environment, with a strong understanding of how strategic content can be used across functions and audiences to support shared goals. Expertise in editorial decision making, donor-centric messaging and multi-channel storytelling. Strong leadership, collaboration, and project management skills.

  • Strategic Leadership & Vision - Define and lead the organizationโ€™s editorial content strategy to support fundraising priorities and donor engagement. Align content initiatives with institutional goals and philanthropic objectives. Drive innovation in storytelling and digital content integration.
  • Team Leadership & Development - Manage and mentor a team of writers and editors, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration. Build team capacity to deliver high-quality, donor-focused content across channels.
  • Content Strategy & Execution - Oversee creation of proposals, impact reports, campaign materials, event collateral, and stewardship communications for top-tier donors. Ensure content reflects Childrenโ€™s National brand voice, mission, and values while meeting strategic objectives. Lead editorial planning cycles and manage complex workflows for major campaigns and the Childrenโ€™s National Magazine.
  • Governance & Standards - Establish and maintain editorial guidelines, templates, and quality standards. Ensure consistency in tone, voice, and messaging across all communications.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration - Partner with development leadership, marketing, and hospital stakeholders to source and shape compelling content. Serve as a strategic advisor on messaging for campaigns, events, and donor communications.

The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Childrenโ€™s National believes an individualโ€™s base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Childrenโ€™s National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individualโ€™s combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. This base salary range does not include our comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
