Job description

Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.
As a Senior Build & Release Engineer for the TeraWave project, you will be the architect of our end-to-end development velocity. You will build and maintain the "source-to-production" pipeline, ensuring consistency across our entire ecosystem: from low-level firmware on satellites and user terminals to high-availability cloud microservices and gateway controllers. You will lead the transition to a hermetic, reproducible, and automated infrastructure that allows our engineering teams to ship flight-critical features and backend updates daily.
Key Responsibilities
  • Unified Build Ecosystem: Design and maintain a single, integrated build system (Bazel-centric) that orchestrates the building, testing, and packaging of a variety of codebases, including C/C++ firmware, Go/Java/Python microservices, and containerized cloud workloads.

  • Hermetic & Reproducible Pipelines: Eliminate environment-specific failures by implementing hermetic build practices. Ensure that any developer, build agent, or CI environment generates identical binary artifacts from the same source revision.

  • Toolchain & Dependency Management: Manage complex cross-compilation toolchains for embedded targets (ARM, RISC-V) and standardized runtime environments for cloud services (Docker/OCI images).

  • CI/CD at Scale: Design and scale highly concurrent containerized CI/CD pipelines. Integrate unit tests, integration tests, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulations into a unified "Push on Green" workflow.

  • Cloud & Microservices Orchestration: Automate the containerization of cloud software (Kubernetes/Docker). Manage versioning and deployment strategies for microservices that handle network orchestration, telemetry ingestion, and satellite constellation management.

  • Release Engineering & OTA: Define the release lifecycle for multi-target deployments. Automate the generation of signed, secure, and verifiable images for hardware assets (OTA) and container images for cloud clusters.

  • Mono-Repo Strategy: Manage the technical structure and dependency graph of our monorepo, ensuring clear boundaries between firmware, middleware, and cloud service code while maintaining high velocity.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

  • 7+ years of experience in build/release engineering, DevOps, or SRE, with a focus on both embedded/firmware and distributed cloud services.

  • Expert-level proficiency in Bazel (required); extensive experience with CMake/Ninja for firmware and build tools like Gradle/Maven/Go Modules for services.

  • Deep knowledge of containerization (Docker, Podman) and orchestration (Kubernetes, Helm).

  • Strong scripting and automation skills (Python, Bash, or Go).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing monorepos at scale.

  • Proficiency in embedded Linux (Yocto/Buildroot) and its integration with cloud-native deployment patterns.

  • Experience with secure software supply chain practices: code signing, SBOM generation, and automated vulnerability scanning in pipelines.

  • Familiarity with IaC (Terraform, Ansible) and public cloud environments (AWS/Azure) to support large-scale microservice deployments.

  • Background in real-time or safety-critical software release cycles, where firmware/software synchronization is vital to network stability.

Base Pay Range for:
WA applicants is $197,529.00 - $276,539.55
Other site ranges may differ
