Job Description

Engineering - Mechanical 3-6 Yrs. Exp. (Special Projects - Seattle/Tacoma) 

KPFF Special Projects Group is currently seeking exceptional individuals with 3-6 years of experience to apply for the position of Mechanical Engineer in either our Seattle or Tacoma offices.  Candidates who are attracted to our philosophy, team culture, and unique work environment are encouraged to submit their cover letter and resume for consideration. 

KPFF's Special Projects Seattle and Tacoma offices are part of a dynamic 150+ person group that provides civil engineering and planning, structural engineering, mechanical engineering and machine design, and project management. We provide these services on a wide range of project types through all stages of development. 

Typical project types include: 

  • Moveable vehicle and pedestrian bridges and other heavy moveable structures 
  • Doors for aircraft hangars and other large buildings 
  • Container terminal infrastructure design 
  • Marina design 
  • Ports, harbors, shipyards and other industrial waterfront projects 
  • Fluid power design 
  • Fuel piping systems 
  • Bulk material handling systems 
  • Rail Locomotive Maintenance Facility Infrastructure 
  • Fisheries Engineering 

Physical demands and work environment: 

  • Duties are primarily conducted in a standard office setting, requiring prolonged periods of sitting at a desk. 
  • Occasionally may be required to lift objects weighing up to 15 lbs. 
  • Occasionally visiting project locations and performing indoor/outdoor field observations, which may involve walking, standing, kneeling, climbing stairs/ladders and navigating uneven terrain. 
Qualifications

Our ideal candidates would have: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering 
  • EIT is required. 
  • Exposure to project engineering and project management. 
  • Understanding of core mechanical engineering concepts, including machine design principles, statics, dynamics, kinematics, fluid mechanics, and strength of materials. 
  • Familiarity with force analysis including free-body diagrams and shear/bending/moment diagrams. 
  • Knowledge of stress analysis, including exposure to finite element analysis (FEA). 
  • Familiarity with design of weldments. 
  • Familiarity with design / specification of bearings, pins and other standard machinery components. 
  • Familiarity with kinematic and dynamic analysis of machinery. 
  • Familiarity with hydraulic power systems. 
  • Familiarity with electric motors, electronic drives, and controls. 
  • Familiarity with industrial process piping and pumps. 
  • Familiarity with Bulk Materials Handling and Storage. 
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks including parts modeling, assembly creation, and drawing production. 
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or Revit. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with project team members and clients on a variety of projects. 
  • Detail oriented and desire for continued learning. 
  • Clear communication and writing skills.

Compensation:

The total compensation for this role is competitive and will be determined based on the candidate's experience, education, and skills. The expected total compensation range for a qualified candidate is $90,000 - $110,000 including performance-based bonuses to recognize and reward outstanding contributions in each Reporting Center.
