At Altria, you'll have the opportunity to play a key role in developing next-generation oral pouch products that meet consumer needs while maintaining the highest standards of quality, performance, and regulatory compliance.
We are seeking a Product Development Scientist (Principal Scientist I) to lead the development of innovative oral pouch formulations and product designs while supporting the commercialization, optimization, and long-term success of our product portfolio. This position is a hybrid work position located in Richmond,VA that supports Product Development Lifecyle, must be flexible to adjusted schedule when need.
What you will be doing:
  • Lead the development, scale-up, and quality stewardship of innovative oral pouch products from concept through commercialization.
  • Translate consumer insights, business objectives, and regulatory requirements into successful product solutions.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver manufacturing-ready products, including material qualification, process development, and production readiness activities.
  • Collaborate with global partners, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to support product testing and international commercialization efforts.
  • Adapt product formulations and manufacturing processes to meet the needs of diverse global markets, considering regional consumer preferences, regulations, and supply chain requirements.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve product quality, performance, manufacturability, and cost efficiency.
  • Support lifecycle management activities, including product maintenance, optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives for commercialized products.
  • Share technical expertise and contribute to a culture of innovation, collaboration, and operational excellence.

We want you to have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in product and/or process development within a manufacturing, scientific, consumer products, pharmaceutical, food, medical device, or other regulated environment.
  • Experience supporting product commercialization and lifecycle management activities.
  • Working knowledge of Quality by Design (QbD), Design Control, risk management principles, or similar product development frameworks.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements applicable to regulated industries.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive projects forward in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time in a manufacturing environment, lift up to 50 lbs., and travel internationally

The starting salary is based on but not limited to experience, knowledge, and qualifications in determining compensation decisions. The Salary Range for this position is: $119,600.00 - $173,450.00.
