What does a consumer lending manager do?

A Consumer Lending Manager oversees the process of providing loans to individual consumers, such as personal loans, auto loans, and credit lines. They manage a team of loan officers, ensure compliance with lending regulations, and develop strategies to meet lending targets. Their responsibilities also include evaluating loan applications, assessing credit risk, and maintaining relationships with clients. By guiding the lending team and optimizing processes, they help ensure both customer satisfaction and the financial health of the organization.

What does a consumer lending manager do?

As a consumer lending manager, your job is to supervise the approval of loans at a bank or credit union. This includes balancing how many loans are given out, deciding when to approve or deny requests from consumers, and ensuring the bank follows all lending regulations. Consumer lending managers also help to improve the operation of a lending company by looking for ways to attract better customers, drive sales of the bank's other products and services, and increase the rate of repayments from customers. At some lending institutions, you may be asked to create offers for select customers or support groups with which the bank is negotiating. For example, your bank may offer faster approval of car loans as a perk for customers who work at a particular company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a consumer lending manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Consumer Lending Manager, you need a solid understanding of lending regulations, credit analysis, and financial products, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in finance or a related field. Familiarity with loan origination systems, credit scoring software, and regulatory compliance tools is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills help build high-performing teams and foster positive client relationships. These competencies ensure sound lending decisions, regulatory compliance, and sustained business growth in a competitive financial environment.

What are some common challenges consumer lending managers face when balancing loan growth and credit risk?

As the SVP of Consumer Lending, you will lead the strategy, growth, and operational performance of the credit union's consumer lending portfolio, including home equity, auto loans, other secured loans, personal loans, and credit cards. You will ensure our lending practices are competitive, compliant, and aligned with member needs and organizational goals.
This role blends strategic vision with hands-on leadership - sharpening pricing and product strategy and building a service culture that makes borrowing with CFCU simple, fast, human, and always focused on the member.
As the SVP of Consumer Lending with CFCU, you will:

  • Elevate lending operations. Oversee underwriting, processing, and servicing functions, ensure efficient workflows and a strong member experience, and monitor loan pipeline and funding performance.
  • Safeguard the portfolio. Maintain sound underwriting standards and credit policies, ensure compliance with NCUA, DFI, and fair lending regulations, and monitor delinquency, charge-offs, and portfolio quality.
  • Shape our product lineup. Design and improve consumer loan products, make recommendations on rates, terms, and promotions to remain competitive, and partner with Marketing on campaigns.
  • Lead and develop top talent. Lead and develop lending managers and team members, set performance expectations and KPIs, and build a strong service culture.
  • Own financial performance. Manage the lending budget and revenue targets, optimize loan yield while balancing risk, and report performance outcomes to senior leadership.
  • Champion the member experience. Ensure an efficient and transparent lending process, improve digital lending capabilities, and address member feedback and service gaps.

We are looking for a combination of:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or a related field preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in consumer lending, banking, or credit unions.
  • 5+ years in a senior leadership role.
  • Several years of progressive responsibility in leadership or management roles.
  • Strong background in underwriting, credit risk, and loan operations.
  • Strategic thinker with strong financial analysis skills.
