Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications provides strategic and operational leadership for South Shore Health's integrated marketing and communications function. The Executive Director translates health system priorities into coordinated marketing, brand, digital, public relations, executive and internal communications strategies that advance growth, strengthen market position, enhance consumer and colleague engagement, and protect organizational reputation. Working in close partnership with executive, physician, clinical and operational leaders, the Executive Director leads the planning, execution and evaluation of initiatives supporting priority service lines, patient acquisition, physician engagement, philanthropy and organizational change. This leader oversees a high-performing team, establishes clear performance measures, uses consumer insight and analytics to inform decisions, and ensures consistent, high-quality communications aligned with South Shore Health's mission, vision, values and strategic objectives.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Strategic Marketing Leadership. Leads the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of integrated marketing and communications plans that translate South Shore Health's strategic priorities into focused, measurable action.

2. Growth and Service Line Marketing. Partners with executive, physician, clinical and operational leaders to develop marketing strategies that support priority service lines, patient acquisition, physician engagement, access initiatives and community needs.

3. Brand Stewardship and Market Positioning. Directs brand governance and ensures consistent messaging, visual identity and brand experience across organizational channels and touchpoints. Advances awareness, preference and differentiation in the market.

4. Digital Marketing and Consumer Engagement. Provides leadership for website strategy, digital campaigns, social media, search, content and emerging technologies that improve consumer engagement and support organizational objectives.

5. Executive, Internal and External Communications. Directs executive and organizational communications, including leadership messaging, presentations, Board materials, colleague communications and change communications. Serves as a trusted communications advisor to senior leaders.

6. Media Relations, Reputation and Crisis Communications. Leads proactive media relations and reputation management and coordinates timely, effective communications during significant events, issues and crises, including participation in on-call coverage as required.

7. Analytics and Market Intelligence. Establishes performance measures and uses market research, consumer insight, competitive intelligence and campaign analytics to evaluate effectiveness, optimize investment and inform recommendations.

8. Financial and Operational Leadership. Develops and manages the Marketing & Communications budget, agency and vendor relationships, technology resources, work processes and service standards to ensure responsible stewardship and operational excellence.

9. Talent and Team Leadership. Builds, develops and retains a high-performing team through clear expectations, coaching, performance management, succession planning and opportunities for professional growth.

10. Cross-Functional and Organizational Leadership. Builds effective partnerships across clinical, operational and administrative areas; contributes to strategic initiatives and organizational change; and ensures marketing and communications work is cohesive, timely and aligned with South Shore Health's mission and values.
 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education - Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, Healthcare Administration or a related field required. Master's degree preferred.
Minimum Work Experience
Eight to ten years of progressively responsible marketing and communications experience, including at least five years leading multidisciplinary teams. Healthcare experience in a complex, matrixed or integrated delivery system is strongly preferred.
Required Additional Knowledge and Abilities
• Demonstrated ability to translate organizational strategy into integrated marketing and communications plans that support growth and measurable business outcomes.
• Comprehensive knowledge of brand management, digital marketing, media relations, public relations, executive communications, internal communications and crisis response.
• Strong business acumen and understanding of healthcare operations, service line strategy, physician relationships, consumer behavior and competitive market dynamics.
• Experience using market research, consumer insights, digital analytics and performance measures to guide decisions and demonstrate value.
• Exceptional writing, presentation, interpersonal and executive advisory skills, with the ability to influence across a complex organization.
• Strong financial, project, agency and vendor management capabilities.
• Proven ability to lead change, develop talent, establish accountability and foster an inclusive, collaborative and high-performing culture.
