What is consumer behavior?

Consumer behavior is the study of how individuals, groups, or organizations select, purchase, use, and dispose of goods, services, ideas, or experiences. It examines the processes and motivations behind consumers’ decisions and actions, including psychological, social, and cultural influences. Understanding consumer behavior helps businesses tailor their products and marketing strategies to better meet customer needs and preferences.

What types of projects or tasks does a consumer behavior specialist typically work on within a marketing team?

As a Consumer Behavior Specialist, you’ll often be involved in projects such as analyzing customer data, conducting market research, and developing insights to inform marketing strategies. You may collaborate closely with data analysts, product managers, and creative teams to interpret purchasing patterns and design campaigns that resonate with target audiences. Your daily tasks could include running surveys, interpreting focus group feedback, and preparing reports that guide product development or advertising decisions. The role offers exposure to multiple departments and the opportunity to directly influence how a brand connects with consumers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a consumer behavior analyst, and why are they important?

Teaching Faculty - School of Business (Economics)Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, TN

Southern Adventist University seeks a full-time teaching faculty member in the School of Business for face-to-face classroom instruction on the campus in Collegedale, TN, with expertise in applied business economics. The ideal candidate will excel at teaching how economic principles shape decisions, strategy, and outcomes across every area of business - not just in theory, but in the day-to-day realities of firms, markets, and organizations.

We are especially interested in scholars and teachers who can bridge economic insight with practical business applications and experience, using both analytical tools and real-world context to drive better decision-making; and who can effectively integrate course content with current events and real-world applications. Ideal candidates will facilitate learning congruent with a Christian biblical worldview and Seventh-day Adventist beliefs, fostering student engagement, spiritual growth, and career readiness in ethical, data-informed global business practices.

Required Experience
  • Earned doctorate degree in economics or doctorate degree with a master's degree in economics or closely related field from an accredited institution, with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the area(s) of expertise.
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in for-profit sectors
  • Articulate integration of biblical foundations in applied business economics in local and international contexts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student learning, engagement, and holistic advising (academic, career, spiritual).
  • Evidence of successful teaching at undergraduate/graduate levels, with a focus on student-centered, experiential learning (preferred).
