What Do Consultants Do?

Consultants assist companies, usually as non-employees or independent contractors. They are highly sought after due to their expertise in a particular field and are viewed as an authority figure in their area of concentration. Consultants have a unique perspective, as they offer an outside viewpoint and are able to make valuable unbiased observations for their clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Consultant, you need strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and industry-specific knowledge, often supported by a relevant degree or professional experience. Familiarity with project management tools, data analysis software, and sometimes certifications like PMP or Six Sigma is highly valuable. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and client management skills help consultants build trust and deliver tailored solutions. These skills are crucial for effectively diagnosing client needs, developing actionable strategies, and ensuring successful project outcomes.

How do consultants typically balance multiple client projects and ensure effective communication with stakeholders?

Consultants often juggle several client projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational and time management skills. They usually rely on structured project management tools and regular check-ins to track progress and prioritize tasks. Effective communication is maintained through scheduled meetings, detailed status reports, and clear documentation to keep all stakeholders informed and aligned. Collaborative platforms and proactive outreach help consultants quickly address issues and maintain strong client relationships throughout each engagement.

What are consultants?

Consultants are professionals who provide expert advice and guidance to organizations or individuals in a specific field. They analyze problems, develop solutions, and help clients improve their performance or achieve specific goals. Consultants may work independently or as part of a consulting firm, and their work often involves assessing business processes, recommending improvements, and helping implement changes. They are valued for their specialized knowledge and ability to offer objective, external perspectives.

Do consultants make a lot of money?

Consultants' salaries vary based on industry, experience, and specialization, but many earn competitive wages, especially those with advanced skills or certifications. Senior consultants or those working in management or specialized fields can earn six-figure incomes, often supplemented by bonuses or profit sharing.

Core Competencies:
  • Client Advisory - Trusted advisor capability with ability to lead discovery workshops and strategic roadmap sessions.
  • Solution Architecture - Skill in designing scalable, secure M365 environments aligned to client needs.
  • Technical Depth - In-depth knowledge across the M365 stack including security, identity, endpoint, and collaboration tools.
  • Project Execution - Proven ability to manage consulting engagements from scoping through delivery and handoff.
  • Communication - Excellent verbal and written communication skills across technical and executive audiences.
  • Problem Solving - Analytical mindset with ability to diagnose complex technical and organizational challenges.

What you will do:
  • Act as a strategic advisor to clients on Microsoft 365 adoption, architecture, governance, and optimization.
  • Design and implement M365 solutions including SharePoint Online, Teams, Exchange Online, OneDrive, and related workloads.
  • Lead and execute SharePoint content migration projects using ShareGate or comparable migration tools, ensuring data integrity, minimal disruption, and adherence to timelines.
  • Administer and configure the M365 Admin Center, including user management, licensing, service configuration, and tenant health monitoring.
  • Implement and manage identity and access controls through Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), including Conditional Access policies, MFA, and role-based access management.
  • Deploy and configure Microsoft Defender and Intune solutions to enforce endpoint security, compliance policies, and device management at the enterprise level.
  • Guide clients in the adoption and use of Microsoft 365 Copilot, including readiness assessments, rollout planning, and governance frameworks.
  • Develop and present M365 licensing strategies and recommendations aligned with client requirements and budget considerations.
  • Conduct technology assessments, gap analyses, and produce actionable roadmaps for enterprise M365 environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including security, networking, and business stakeholders to ensure holistic solution delivery.
  • Create and maintain solution documentation, architecture diagrams, and knowledge transfer materials for clients and internal teams.
  • Stay current with Microsoft product roadmaps, feature releases, and industry best practices to continuously enhance client recommendations.

What makes you a good fit:
Required Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in technology solutions consulting, with a focus on Microsoft 365 and enterprise productivity platforms.
  • Proficiency in SharePoint Online and content management best practices, including information architecture, permissions management, and governance.
  • Demonstrated expertise with the M365 Admin Center, including tenant-level administration and service management.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) for identity management, SSO, Conditional Access, and directory synchronization.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Defender (Defender for Endpoint, Defender for Office 365, Defender for Identity) and security best practices within M365.
  • Experience deploying and managing Microsoft Intune for mobile device management (MDM) and mobile application management (MAM).
  • Proven experience leading SharePoint content migration projects using ShareGate, Metalogix, or similar enterprise migration tools.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 Copilot capabilities, deployment considerations, and responsible AI governance.
  • Strong understanding of M365 licensing models, including E3/E5 plans, add-on licensing, and cost optimization strategies.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, business-focused recommendations for executive and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with enterprise technology ecosystems, including integration patterns, hybrid environments, and third-party platforms.

Preferred Experience
  • Microsoft certifications such as MS-900, MS-102, SC-300, MD-102, or equivalent M365/Azure credentials.
  • Experience with Microsoft Purview (compliance, data governance, and information protection).
  • Knowledge of Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps) and its integration within M365 workflows.
  • Background in enterprise change management, user adoption programs, and training delivery.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Viva suite and employee experience platforms.
  • Experience in a professional services consulting or managed services environment.
