What is construction staking?

Construction staking is the process of placing physical markers on a construction site to indicate the exact locations and elevations where structures or improvements should be built according to engineering plans. Surveyors use specialized equipment to ensure that these markers are accurate, helping contractors build in the correct positions and avoid costly errors. This step is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the project design and ensuring compliance with local codes and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in construction staking?

To thrive in Construction Staking, you need a solid understanding of surveying principles, site layout, and basic civil engineering concepts, often supported by a degree or certification in surveying or a related field. Proficiency with surveying equipment such as total stations, GPS systems, and CAD software is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication are important soft skills for success. These competencies ensure precise site measurements, minimize costly errors, and facilitate smooth coordination among construction teams.

What are some common challenges faced in a construction staking role, and how can they be managed on the job site?

Construction Staking professionals often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex site plans, dealing with unforeseen site conditions, and maintaining precise measurements even in adverse weather. Effective communication with engineers, surveyors, and construction crews is key to overcoming these issues. Utilizing up-to-date technology and double-checking all reference points can help ensure accuracy and prevent costly errors. Being adaptable and proactive in addressing discrepancies on-site will help keep projects on schedule and within budget.

Job description

Field Surveyor / Field Engineer
To be considered, you must have 5+ years of hands-on land surveying experience, including construction surveying and civil construction layout.
Are you a detail-oriented survey professional who understands how accurate field data directly impacts construction success? Do you take pride in precise layout, construction staking, survey control, and producing reliable as-built documentation? Are you comfortable working independently in the field, supporting project teams, and traveling to federal project sites? If so, we want to speak with you.
C.A. Murren is seeking an experienced Field Surveyor / Field Engineer to support federal civil construction projects across multiple locations. This role is responsible for precise field layout, construction staking, survey control, as-built documentation, and support of GPS and machine-control operations.
The ideal candidate is a construction-minded survey professional - not simply someone who can collect points, but someone who understands how survey control, layout, machine control, grading, and as-built documentation fit together within the construction process.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform precise field layout and construction staking for earthwork, grading, utilities, structures, roads, drainage, concrete, and other civil construction activities
  • Perform construction layout for building footers, corners, dowels, and related structural components
  • Establish, maintain, and verify horizontal and vertical project control
  • Operate and maintain total stations, robotic total stations, builder's levels, rotary lasers, and GPS/GNSS base and rover equipment
  • Support, configure, troubleshoot, and verify earthwork machine-control systems
  • Perform import and export of technical project data
  • Perform pre-construction and construction topographic surveys to verify project control and existing site conditions
  • Conduct detailed as-built surveys to accurately document installed work, elevations, grades, utilities, and structures
  • Identify discrepancies between design information and actual field conditions and communicate issues to project management and supervision
  • Maintain accurate field notes, project files, as-built work orders, and equipment logs
  • Assist the Survey Department with equipment tracking and routine quality-control checks on survey and leveling equipment
  • Assist project teams with quantity verification, earthwork measurements, grade checks, and construction quality control
  • Work closely with equipment operators, foremen, superintendents, project managers, and other contractors to ensure construction meets required design tolerances
  • Review plans, specifications, drawings, and digital models to prepare for field layout
  • Travel to and work on federal projects in various locations
  • Perform other survey, layout, and field-support duties as required

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands-on land surveying experience, including construction surveying and civil construction layout
  • Strong hands-on experience with total stations, builder's levels, rotary/rotating lasers, and GPS/GNSS base and rover systems
  • Hands-on experience with Trimble systems, including:
    • Trimble Siteworks
    • Trimble Business Center (TBC)
    • Trimble total stations and robotic total stations
    • Trimble GNSS/GPS base and rover systems
    • Trimble machine-control technology
  • Demonstrated experience supporting earthwork machine control, including setup, verification, troubleshooting, and field coordination
  • Proven ability to perform accurate construction layout and staking, including building footers, corners, and dowels
  • Experience completing detailed and accurate as-built surveys
  • Strong understanding of construction elevations, grades, coordinates, benchmarks, control networks, and site layout
  • Ability to read and interpret civil construction plans, profiles, details, specifications, and digital models
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to manage the import and export of technical data
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Self-driven with the ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field
  • Ability to communicate effectively with field crews and project management

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience on federal, military, USACE, NAVFAC, or other government civil construction projects
  • Familiarity with the increased documentation, quality-control, safety, and security requirements associated with government work
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu
  • Experience with electronic project filing systems such as Box
  • Technical education, coursework, certification, or degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering technology, construction, or a related field
  • Surveyor-in-Training (SIT), Professional Land Surveyor (PLS), or other relevant surveying certification
  • OSHA 10, USACE, EM 385-1-1, or other applicable construction safety training

Requirements
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must be able and willing to travel extensively to project locations
  • Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to walk and work over uneven terrain and active construction sites
  • Must be comfortable working around heavy construction equipment
  • Must be able to carry and operate survey equipment and accessories
  • Must be able to work extended hours when project schedules require
  • Must participate in pre-employment and random drug screening program
  • Subject to a background screening process
