Job description

Office Location: Detroit Lakes, MN
This position is a senior level position with the opportunity to maintain and develop Apex's Municipal services for public and private clients. Individual will be responsible for managing and growing Apex's Municipal services in the Minnesota (MN) and/or North Dakota (ND) markets. A qualified candidate will be expected to develop and execute short and long-term revenue goals, monitor project budgets, recruit and hire key staff, and pursue new project and client opportunities. Individual will report directly to Apex's Municipal Sector Leader. The candidate will be expected to attend meetings in person with key municipal engineers and operations personnel. Individual will be expected to be involved in promoting the company through industry-specific professional organizations.
Essential Tasks and Duties:
  • Manage all aspects of client relationships. Discuss clients potential project opportunities, details of RFPs and contract reviews.
  • Establish and maintain key strategic partnerships to effectively win work and deliver quality municipal and infrastructure design and construction services.
  • Collaborate with other sector leaders within the company regarding pursuits and staffing.
  • Follow and maintain strategic plan initiatives and goals for the Mn and/or ND municipal sector and the company.
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to mentor project engineers in areas of contract development, project profitability and risk management.
  • Participate in business development and marketing activities related to municipal services with potential new clients and existing municipal clients.
  • Attend appropriate conferences and professional seminars as deemed necessary to further Apex's mission to grow MN and/or ND municipal services.
  • Attend professional conferences with appropriate sector personnel, strategizing for marketing opportunities and overall exposure of Apex at related events.
  • Coordinate and direct project pursuit efforts by participating in prospecting, positions, proposing and performance for specific projects that have the potential to have significant impact on the sector's revenue.
  • Participate in municipal leadership team meetings.
  • Responsible for hiring and recruiting strategic positions that meet the company or sector growth goals.
  • Utilize effective communication skills required in settings such as public meetings and professional seminars, etc.
  • Responsible for providing the Municipal Sector Leader with financial and progress reports on MN and/or ND Municipal related operations.
  • Keep abreast of the latest civil engineering technical advancements, technology, and concepts in the MN and/or ND Municipal market and make recommendations to the Municipal Sector Leader as appropriate. This position will require the initiative to think independently and make rational judgment calls under the direction of the Municipal Sector Leader.
  • Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
  • Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs.
  • Travel and out-of-town stays may be required.
  • This position may frequently require more than 40-hour work weeks.

Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, with 10+ years of municipal engineering experience and a minimum of 7 years project management experience, predominantly in the State of MN and/or ND.
  • A licensed engineer to practice engineering within the State of MN and/or ND.
  • Experience and working knowledge preferred in municipal engineering, construction, and public works/utilities in MN and/or ND.
  • Experience and working knowledge with public agencies located in Minnesota and/or North Dakota.
  • Experience with developing business and managing personnel in the consulting engineering industry is preferred.
  • Involvement in appropriate professional organizations beneficial to Apex and the municipal sector.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D or other CADD-based civil design software is a plus.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Must be detail orientated, self-motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • A valid driver's license is required or the ability to obtain one.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
  • Must be able to clearly articulate both verbal and written communications.
  • Required to lift and move objects up to 50 pound occasionally.
  • May require prolonged periods of standing and walking to perform some of the typical tasks and duties.
  • Must be able to work required hours in the office or offsite.
