What is a construction project engineer?

Construction Project Engineers are professionals who oversee and coordinate technical aspects of construction projects. They work closely with project managers, architects, and contractors to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to design specifications. Their responsibilities include planning, scheduling, quality control, and solving engineering problems that arise during construction. Effective communication and organizational skills are essential in this role, as they bridge the gap between the design and construction teams.

What does a construction project engineer do?

A construction project engineer works on job sites to liaise with contractors, subcontractors, the client, and the construction project manager. In this career, you ensure that the work site is safe for workers and that the project proceeds in a safe and timely manner. You are in charge of planning out the project from meeting with the client about ideas and plan, to coming up with projections for timing and schedules. As the construction project engineer, you must be on site daily to ensure every member of the construction team is sticking to the designated schedule and is working safely as the project progresses.

What skills do successful construction project engineers have?

To thrive as a Construction Project Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering or construction management, often supported by a relevant degree and, sometimes, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency in project management software (like Procore or Primavera), AutoCAD, and familiarity with building codes and safety regulations are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams set standout candidates apart. These skills ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget while maintaining high-quality standards.

What are some of the most common challenges construction project engineers face during a project, and how can they effectively address them?

Construction Project Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating between multiple subcontractors, managing tight deadlines, and handling unforeseen site conditions. To address these challenges, successful engineers rely on strong communication skills, proactive scheduling, and regular progress meetings with the project team. Staying organized and adaptable allows them to quickly resolve conflicts, ensure safety compliance, and keep the project on track. Building strong relationships with both on-site teams and office staff is key to maintaining smooth project workflow.

What is the difference between Construction Project Engineer vs Construction Superintendent?

AspectConstruction Project EngineerConstruction Superintendent

While both roles are essential in construction projects, the Construction Project Engineer focuses on planning, coordination, and technical management, often working from the office. The Construction Superintendent is responsible for on-site supervision, ensuring daily operations run smoothly and safely. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and project responsibilities.

Job description

Texas City, United States | Posted on 08/20/2026

We are seeking a highly organized, computer-savvy Senior Project Engineer to manage the planning, scheduling, financial tracking, coordination, and execution of a high volume of fast-moving construction projects.

This is primarily an office-based project management role, with approximately 60โ€“80% of the position focused on scheduling, project software, budgeting, client communication, materials coordination, and preparing crews for upcoming work.

Most projects are short in duration, often averaging only a few days. Because of that, this position requires someone who can think ahead, recognize potential scheduling or logistical issues early, and understand how one delay can impact multiple projects behind it.

The right person is proactive, highly organized, financially aware, comfortable with technology, and able to manage several moving pieces without losing control of the bigger picture.

What You Will Do
  • Manage multiple active and upcoming construction projects simultaneously.
  • Build, maintain, and adjust project schedules using construction management software.
  • Track project budgets, costs, labor, materials, and overall financial performance.
  • Coordinate crews, subcontractors, warehouse personnel, vendors, materials, and equipment before each project begins.
  • Ensure materials are ordered, staged, and ready so crews can execute without unnecessary downtime.
  • Prepare teams for upcoming projects through pre-construction planning, scheduling, documentation, and coordination.
  • Communicate directly with clients regarding schedules, project status, delays, changes, and expectations.
  • Identify scheduling conflicts, travel inefficiencies, material issues, and other project risks before they impact execution.
  • Adjust project sequencing based on jobsite readiness, crew availability, travel time, material delivery, and changing field conditions.
  • Maintain accurate project information, schedules, financials, and documentation within the project management system.
  • Work closely with field teams while owning the planning, financial, scheduling, and communication side of each project.
What We Are Looking For
  • 5+ years of experience in construction project engineering, project management, project controls, construction operations, or a similar role.
  • Experience managing multiple construction projects at different stages simultaneously.
  • Strong scheduling, planning, logistics, and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of project budgets, job costs, labor, materials, and financial tracking.
  • Strong computer literacy and confidence working in project management systems throughout the day.
  • Experience with Projul, Procore, or similar construction project management software strongly preferred.
  • Strong Excel, email, documentation, and general software skills.
  • Excellent client communication and professional follow-through.
  • Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and make adjustments before they impact the overall schedule.
  • Experience coordinating crews, subcontractors, vendors, materials, and project logistics.
  • Comfortable working primarily in an office environment while staying closely connected to field operations.

Candidates may come from a variety of construction environments, including:

  • Landscape construction
  • Concrete or hardscape construction
  • Specialty contracting
  • Commercial renovation
  • Municipal or school construction
  • Other construction companies managing numerous short-duration projects
  • Experience with excavation, demolition, drainage, concrete, sidewalks, shade structures, playgrounds, or related site construction is helpful.
