Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled Controller to oversee all financial operations of our commercial construction company. This role is responsible for managing the accounting team, maintaining accurate financial reporting, strengthening internal controls, and supporting strategic decision-making. The Controller will work closely with executive leadership, project managers, and operations teams to ensure financial health, compliance, and cost control across all projects.

Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management & Reporting
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

  • Manage the general ledger, job cost systems, WIP schedules, and cash flow reporting.

  • Monitor and analyze financial performance of projects, divisions, and company operations.

  • Ensure timely and accurate posting of invoices, payroll, AP, AR, and journal entries.

  • Cash management: monitor project-level cash flow and working capital, forecast receipts/disbursements, manage draw schedules and vendor payments, and coordinate with Executive Team/Operations to maintain liquidity and banking compliance (including lien waivers and pay-app timing).

  • Lead monthly close processes and maintain strong account reconciliation procedures.

  • Other duties as prescribed by management.

Construction Job Costing
  • Maintain detailed job cost tracking for all active projects.

  • Work with project managers to review budgets, forecasts, change orders, and cost-to-complete updates.

  • Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) reports and revenue recognition.

  • Ensure costs are allocated accurately and consistently across projects.

Compliance & Controls
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, state and federal regulations, and company policies.

  • Maintain strong internal controls, accounting procedures, and audit readiness.

  • Oversee financial aspects of insurance, bonding, and licensing.

  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.

Team Leadership
  • Manage and mentor accounting team members, ensuring high performance and professional development.

  • Establish efficient workflows and implement best practices in accounting and financial processes.

  • Collaborate with HR on payroll and benefit administration.

Strategic & Operational Support
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to executive leadership.

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning.

  • Assist in contract reviews, vendor negotiations, and cost-saving initiatives.

  • Help evaluate new market expansion, capital investments, and risk management strategies.

  • Assist in vendor management correspondence.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA/CMA preferred).

  • 7+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3+ years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role within the construction industry.

  • Strong understanding of job cost accounting, WIP, revenue recognition, and construction financial systems.

  • Proficiency in construction accounting software, specifically Sage Intacct.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
