The City of Walker is growing and with that the Engineering Department has a critical role to fill. We are looking for an additional Assistant City Engineer, and you'll be working alongside your counterpart and fellow Assistant City Engineer to oversee exciting public infrastructure projects from concept to completion. From managing traffic safety initiatives and roadway improvements to coordinating major capital projects and collaborating with regional partners, no two days are ever the same.

You'll have the opportunity to:

• Manage infrastructure planning for roads, bridges, sidewalks, trails, and stormwater systems.
• Oversee public improvement projects from design through construction.
• Collaborate with MDOT, Kent County, regional agencies, consultants, developers, and City leadership.
• Assist the Planning Commission in guiding private development projects that shape Walker's future.
• Recommend innovative engineering solutions and modern infrastructure improvements.
• Support long-range planning that keeps our community growing responsibly.
• Step into leadership by assisting with department operations and serving in the City Engineer's absence when needed.
• Coordinating with Finance and Public Works on long-term infrastructure investments.
• Preparing engineering reports and presenting recommendations to City Commission, Planning Commission, and other boards.
• Assisting with grant applications and securing funding for future projects.
• Building positive relationships with residents, contractors, developers, and regional agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you'll possess:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Michigan (or the ability to obtain licensure within one year)
• Strong knowledge of municipal engineering principles, infrastructure design, construction standards, and project management
• Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills
• Ability to work effectively with elected officials, residents, consultants, contractors, and fellow team members
• Valid Michigan driver's license with an acceptable driving record

Physical Demands and Work Environment

An employee in this position spends a portion of their time in an office setting with a controlled climate where they sit and work on a computer for extended periods of time; communicate by telephone, e-mail or in person, and move around the office or travel to other locations to attend meetings and site visits.

Additionally, this position spends a portion of the time in the field conducting field inspections which typically involves moderate physical activity and exertion. An employee in this position visit field sites which may have treacherous terrain or dangers associated with construction sites. An employee must have the strength, stamina and physical coordination required to complete physical inspections in every type of weather condition, including occasionally extreme heat and severe cold weather. Inspections occasionally involve crawling, stooping, climbing or otherwise accessing all areas of the site, and the employee is required to have the vision capabilities needed to complete visual inspections and complete measurements.
