CONTROLLER

Alvarez Construction | Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Alvarez Construction is one of Louisiana's largest and fastest-growing residential homebuilders, closing over 300 homes annually. We are seeking a highly analytical, business-minded Controller to join our executive leadership team.

This is more than a traditional accounting role. As Controller, you will work directly with the President to drive financial performance, improve operational efficiency, and provide the data and insights that help shape strategic business decisions.

What You'll Do

Financial Leadership

  • Lead the month-end and year-end close process.
  • Prepare timely, accurate financial statements.
  • Oversee job costing, revenue recognition, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Maintain accurate Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and bank reporting.
  • Develop executive-level weekly financial and operational reports with measurable KPIs.
  • Ensure the integrity of the general ledger and all accounting records.

Banking & Financial Strategy

  • Manage all banking relationships and lender reporting.
  • Monitor compliance with financial covenants across multiple lending facilities.
  • Prepare borrowing base certificates, WIP reports, and other lender reporting packages.
  • Partner with executive leadership to support strategic financial planning and decision-making.

Leadership

  • Lead and develop the Accounting Department, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Closing, Accounting, and Human Resources.
  • Establish efficient workflows, accountability, and internal controls.
  • Partner closely with Construction, Purchasing, Sales, and Operations to analyze budgets, profitability, and performance.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Systems & Business Intelligence

  • Serve as the accounting administrator for the NewStar ERP system.
  • Build and maintain executive dashboards using Power BI.
  • Utilize SQL/database queries and advanced Excel to analyze operational and financial performance.
  • Identify opportunities to automate processes and improve efficiency across the organization.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred).
  • Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience within the residential homebuilding industry.
  • Strong knowledge of residential homebuilder accounting, including job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP), percentage-of-completion accounting, and the accounting implications of residential sales contracts.
  • Experience managing banking relationships, lender reporting, and financial covenant compliance.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with Power BI, SQL/database queries, and ERP systems (NewStar preferred).

Preferred

  • Experience working for a production residential homebuilder.
  • Background in companies exceeding $30M in annual revenue.
  • Strong understanding of residential purchase agreements, change orders, upgrades, allowances, and how home sales contracts impact financial reporting.
  • Experience collaborating with Sales, Construction, Purchasing, and Closing teams throughout the homebuilding lifecycle.
