CredentialsAccounting degree or certification (e.g., CPA)High school diploma or equivalent, basic bookkeeping skills
Work EnvironmentConstruction firms, project sites, officesOffice settings, small businesses, various industries
Job FocusFinancial management, job costing, payroll, tax complianceRecording financial transactions, maintaining ledgers

Construction accounting involves managing complex financial data specific to construction projects, including job costing and compliance, often requiring specialized certifications. Bookkeepers handle basic financial record-keeping and data entry, typically with less specialized training. While both roles deal with financial data, construction accounting is more comprehensive and strategic, tailored to the construction industry's unique needs.

What is construction accounting?

Construction accounting is a specialized branch of accounting that focuses on tracking, managing, and reporting the financial aspects of construction projects. Unlike standard accounting, it deals with unique challenges such as job costing, progress billing, contract retainage, and project-based financial management. Construction accountants ensure that project expenses, revenues, and budgets are accurately monitored, helping companies make informed decisions and remain compliant with industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in construction accounting, and why are they important?

To thrive in Construction Accounting, you need a strong understanding of accounting principles, job costing, and financial reporting, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with construction-specific software such as Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate (Timberline), Procore, or QuickBooks, as well as certifications like CPA, are highly valuable. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication help professionals manage complex projects and coordinate with contractors and project managers. These skills ensure accurate budgeting, compliance, and financial control, which are crucial for the profitability and success of construction projects.

How does a construction accountant typically interact with project managers and site supervisors?

Construction Accountants regularly collaborate with project managers and site supervisors to track project budgets, monitor expenses, and ensure accurate cost allocation. They often participate in weekly meetings to discuss financial progress, address discrepancies, and forecast cash flow needs. This close communication helps resolve issues quickly, keeps projects on budget, and ensures everyone is aligned on financial expectations throughout each phase of construction.

Job description

Description:

About Us

All In One Accounting is a 7-time winner of the 50 Fastest Growing Companies in the Twin Cities and one of the Best Places to Work in the Minneapolis area. Our purpose is simple: to make the lives of entrepreneurial and nonprofit leaders better. We do that by supporting profitable growth, protecting assets, and amplifying impact — bringing financial clarity and strategic leadership to the clients who need it most. We run on EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System), which means clear goals, strong accountability, and a team that executes with intention.

A bit about the role:

We're seeking a detail-oriented Construction Accountant to support a portfolio of general contractors, subcontractors, home builders, and specialty trade businesses. Construction accounting is its own discipline — job costing, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, subcontractor compliance, and lien waivers aren't concepts you learn on the fly. You bring the technical foundation and the discipline to keep construction clients financially organized and profitable. You'll work as part of AIOA's delivery team model, contributing directly to client work alongside your Controller and CFO.

Now about you...

We hire for hungry, humble, and smart — and here's what that looks like at AIOA. Hungry means you bring initiative to every client, push beyond the task at hand, and look for ways to improve processes without being asked. Humble means you know when to escalate, you take feedback well, and you make your team better by being a reliable, low-ego contributor. Smart — in our world — means people-smart and situationally aware: you read clients well, communicate clearly, and know how to navigate complexity without creating noise. If that sounds like you, you'll thrive here.

Responsibilities & Expectations

Client Responsibilities

• Execute day-to-day accounting for a portfolio of construction clients, collaborating closely with your Controller and CFO

• Maintain job cost accounting structures including cost codes, phases, and project budgets

• Process and review subcontractor invoices, lien waivers, and compliance documentation

• Track and reconcile work in progress (WIP) schedules

• Conduct monthly reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts including retainage receivable and payable

• Prepare and manage accounts receivable including AIA billing and draw request support

• Make month-end closing entries with proper job cost documentation

• Monitor budget-to-actual variances by job and communicate significant issues proactively to your Controller and CFO

• Process certified payroll and prevailing wage compliance where applicable

• Support workers' compensation and general liability audit preparation

• Maintain robust internal controls across client accounts

• Utilize current processes and tools, including code red alerts, to proactively identify and prevent fraud throughout all client accounting processes

• Meet or exceed billable hours goals while maintaining service excellence

Internal Responsibilities

• Complete all internal responsibilities including time tracking, capacity planning, and quarterly initiatives

• Actively participate in All In One Accounting's Brand Ambassador program, representing our mission and values

• Uphold security practices to protect client assets effectively

Requirements:

The successful candidate will have:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or equivalent experience

• Experience in a multi-client or Client Accounting Services (CAS) environment strongly preferred

• 3+ years of accounting experience with meaningful construction industry exposure

• Hands-on experience with job cost accounting and project-based financial management

• Familiarity with percentage-of-completion revenue recognition and WIP schedules

• Experience with construction-specific software (Sage, Procore, QuickBooks Online, or similar)

• Excellence in written and verbal communication

• Proven ability to manage multiple client accounts simultaneously

• Experience with fraud prevention and internal controls
