How much do constitutive modeling jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for constitutive modeling in the United States is $121,012.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $105,500.00 and $138,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is constitutive modeling?

Constitutive modeling is the process of developing mathematical models that describe how materials respond to different loads, deformations, or environmental conditions. These models are essential in engineering and science, as they help predict the behavior of materials such as metals, polymers, or biological tissues under various circumstances. Constitutive models take into account properties like elasticity, plasticity, viscosity, and damage to simulate real-world material responses. They are widely used in fields like civil engineering, biomechanics, and materials science to improve the design and safety of structures and products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a constitutive modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Constitutive Modeler, you need a strong background in continuum mechanics, materials science, and advanced mathematics, typically supported by a graduate degree in engineering or physics. Proficiency with computational tools such as finite element analysis (FEA) software, programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB), and experience with simulation platforms is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are crucial for accurately developing models that predict material behavior, which directly impacts the safety and reliability of engineering designs.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in constitutive modeling, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in constitutive modeling often encounter challenges such as limited experimental data for model calibration, selecting appropriate material models for complex behaviors, and ensuring computational efficiency in large-scale simulations. These challenges can be addressed by collaborating closely with experimentalists to gather high-quality data, continuously updating knowledge on the latest modeling techniques, and leveraging advanced numerical methods or software tools tailored for constitutive modeling. Effective communication with multidisciplinary teams is also crucial for integrating models into broader engineering workflows.

What is the difference between Constitutive Modeling vs Finite Element Analysis?

AspectConstitutive ModelingFinite Element Analysis
Primary FocusDeveloping material behavior equationsSimulating physical systems using models
Required CredentialsEngineering degrees, knowledge of material scienceEngineering degrees, understanding of numerical methods
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, R&D departmentsDesign firms, engineering consulting, manufacturing
Industry UsageMaterial science, mechanical engineeringStructural engineering, aerospace, automotive

Constitutive Modeling focuses on creating equations that describe how materials respond under various conditions, while Finite Element Analysis uses these models to simulate and analyze the behavior of structures or components. Both roles often overlap in engineering projects but serve different purposes: one develops the material laws, the other applies them in simulations.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the development of detailed research workplans focused on bridge-related soil-structure interaction.

  • Conduct standard and advanced geotechnical laboratory tests, install instrumentation, and support field monitoring activities.

  • Apply machine learning, AI tools, and advanced data analytics to interpret complex datasets and perform advanced numerical modeling.

Job description

About the Opportunity

Join the Federal Highway Administration’s nationally recognized Geotechnical (GEO) Laboratory and contribute to research that directly impacts the safety, durability, and performance of U.S. transportation infrastructure. As a Geotechnical Research Engineer – Level 2, you will support cutting‑edge research across multiple focus areas—including pavements, scour, bridge foundations, and corrosion of buried elements with primary focus on soil-structure interaction, structural backfill, advanced material characterization, and the application of data science to advanced engineering analytics and predictive research modeling.

This role is ideal for early‑career engineers with strong academic training, hands‑on research experience, and an interest in leveraging machine learning and AI tools in a highly technical, mission‑driven environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory & Field Research

  • Lead the development of detailed research workplans specifically focused on bridge-related soil-structure interaction to address high-priority challenges faced by State DOT engineers.
  • Conduct standard and advanced geotechnical laboratory tests (triaxial, direct shear, resilient modulus, permeability, erosion testing, etc.) per ASTM/AASHTO standards.
  • Prepare, fabricate, and test soil and aggregate specimens, including large‑scale and specialty tests.
  • Install instrumentation, assemble data acquisition systems, and support field monitoring activities.

Data Science, Analysis & Numerical Modelling

  • Apply machine learning, AI tools, and advanced data analytics to interpret complex laboratory and field datasets.
  • Analyze laboratory and field data; prepare plots, summaries, and interpretations.
  • Conduct literature reviews, synthesize findings, and support development of research workplans.
  • Perform advanced numerical modeling (e.g., finite element modeling, constitutive modeling) with a specific focus on soil–structure interaction.

Documentation, Reporting and Lab Operations

  • Document test procedures with high‑quality notes, photos, and schematics.
  • Develop and prepare FHWA research reports, TechBriefs, and peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Support preparation of presentations, technical summaries, and technology‑transfer materials.
  • Assist with equipment setup, maintenance, calibration, safety compliance, and procurement of specialty instrumentation and supplies.
  • Participate in weekly progress meetings and maintain organized project files.

Required Qualifications (GT‑RE Level 2)

  • Master’s degree in civil engineering with a core concentration in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Demonstrated experience in bridge-related geotechnical engineering, soil-structure interaction, and advanced material/aggregate characterization.
  • Hands‑on experience planning, conducting, analyzing, and reporting on laboratory-scale or large-scale geotechnical research beyond degree requirements.
  • Record of technical publications and presentations
