Position: Sports Medicine CTE Teacher
Reports To: Executive Principal
Location: Paul Laurence Dunbar High School
Salary Schedule/Grade: Refer to DEA Schedule

SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Executive Principal and Director of Pathways, plan
and implement appropriate teaching and learning strategies for the Sports Medicine
pathway. This role focuses on delivering a comprehensive curriculum-including
Exercise and Athletic Training, Fitness Evaluation, Nutrition and Wellness, Medical
Terminology, and Athletic Injuries and Prevention-to prepare students for careers in
therapeutic services and exercise science.
QUALIFICATIONS
? Education: Bachelor's or Master's Degree in a related academic or technical
subject area is preferred.
? Certification: Valid Ohio teaching license for high school grades (e.g., 4-12, 7-
12, or Career-Technical license in Health Science) or the ability to obtain.
? Experience: Three to five years or more of industry experience in athletic
training, physical therapy, or exercise physiology is preferred.
? Driver Certification: Ability to obtain Ohio School Van Driver Certification for
transporting students to field trips or CTSO activities.
? Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check and comply with
drug-free workplace rules.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
? Instructional Delivery: Create engaging hands-on lessons aligned with Ohio
Career-Technical standards for exercise science and sports medicine.
? Technical Training: Instruct students in injury prevention, conditioning, and the
rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.
? Clinical Assessment: Guide students in performing fitness evaluations,
including cardiovascular endurance, body composition, and muscular strength
testing.
? Medical Foundations: Teach the rules for constructing medical terms and the
application of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.
? Wellness & Nutrition: Educate students on calculating kilocalorie burn rates and
developing individualized training and nutritional plans.
? Safety & Ethics: Implement protocols for immediate care of athletic trauma and
maintain confidentiality of health records within legal/regulatory bounds.
? Professional Readiness: Integrate 21st-century employability skills, leadership
development, and professional networking into daily instruction.
? Student Assessment: Analyze student data from formative and summative
assessments to differentiate instruction and ensure mastery of technical
competencies.
CORE COMPETENCIES
? Injury Management: Mastery of techniques for wound care, taping, bracing, and
the analysis of mechanical factors in human movement.
? Clinical Communication: Proficiency in interpreting non-verbal communication
and providing aids to facilitate interactions in a healthcare setting.
? Health Information: Knowledge of electronic health records (EHR), information
security, and the elements of medical malpractice/negligence.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES & WORK ENVIRONMENT
? Frequent standing/walking for extended periods in a classroom, lab, or athletic
facility.
? Repetitive motions such as bending, reaching, stretching, and kneeling.
? Ability to lift and/or move items up to 40 lbs.
? Work is performed in classroom and lab settings; subject to strict timelines for
student credentialing and occasional exposure to bodily fluids.
