Consignment Associate information

What is a consignment associate?

Consignment Associates are professionals who work with consignment stores or businesses to manage the intake, pricing, display, and sale of consigned goods, which are items sold on behalf of their owners. They evaluate items for quality and authenticity, handle customer inquiries, and help ensure that both consignors and customers have a positive experience. Consignment Associates also track inventory, process sales transactions, and may assist with marketing or merchandising tasks. Their role is key to ensuring a smooth operation and maximizing sales for both the store and the consignors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a consignment associate?

To thrive as a Consignment Associate, you need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and basic retail or inventory management experience, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory tracking software, and consignment platform tools is typically required. Excellent customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills help you build rapport with consignors and buyers alike. These skills ensure efficient processing, accurate inventory management, and positive client experiences, which are vital for success in consignment retail environments.

What are some common challenges faced by consignment associates and how can they be managed effectively?

Consignment Associates often encounter challenges such as managing fluctuating inventory levels, accurately assessing the value of incoming items, and maintaining clear communication with consignors. To manage these effectively, it's important to develop strong organizational skills, become familiar with pricing trends, and use inventory management systems. Building rapport with consignors and customers also helps ensure smooth transactions and repeat business. Regular training and staying updated on industry best practices can further support success in this role.

Description
Job Title: Jewelry Sales Associate (Part-Time)
Our company is seeking a self-driven and customer-oriented Jewelry Sales Associate to join our team. As a Jewelry Sales Associate, you are the expert for fine jewelry sales and consignment. You'll guide clients through high-emotion purchases, evaluate and price pieces for consignment, and help build a loyal, repeat client base for the jewelry department. You'll be the Jewelry Manager's key sales ally: they set the overall strategy, pricing framework, and profit goals; you help execute on the floor, bring insight from client conversations, and support collection evaluations and consignment intake. Together, you'll create an environment where clients feel both excited and safe making significant jewelry decisions.
Responsibilities:
- Welcome clients warmly, build rapport quickly, and lead them through our consignment process from discovery to close
- Present fine and estate jewelry to customers with clear explanations of materials, craftsmanship, provenance, and value, helping them to find the perfect pieces of jewelry
- Conduct in-store appointments to review collections and identify consignment opportunities
- Support strategic pricing by providing input on market demand, condition, and comparables; confidently discuss pricing and value with clients
- Use negotiation techniques to reach win-win outcomes, defending fair prices, offering alternatives, and avoiding unnecessary discounting
- Share time at the front door when the Greeter needs a break or a day off
- Collaborate on events, social media content, and local outreach to bring in new clients and consignors
- Process transactions accurately and efficiently using our point-of-sale system
- Maintain your client book to ensure repeat business: record key dates and preferences, follow up after purchases, invite clients to events, and stay in touch about new pieces
- Assist with inventory management and staging of merchandise
- Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance your product knowledge and sales skills
Requirements
Requirements:
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of pricing, profit margin, and markdowns
- Knowledge of current fashion trends and styles in jewelry, GIA or similar gemology coursework is a plus
- Previous retail sales experience, preferably in jewelry or luxury goods
- Strong active networks (NPA members welcome)
- Track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets and contributing to team goals
- Experience using POS systems and handling basic inventory processes
- Familiarity with consignment, estate buying, or antique/vintage jewelry is a strong plus
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
If you are passionate about jewelry and you see yourself as a trusted advisor, skilled closer, and enthusiastic relationship-builder in the world of fine and estate jewelry, we'd love to meet you.
