Description of Work
The North Carolina Zoo is expanding, making this an exciting opportunity to join our team. We are seeking a dynamic, friendly, and enthusiastic individual to serve as a CES Guest Surveyor.
In this role, the Guest Surveyor supports the Conservation, Education, and Science (CES) Section by gathering essential information about the Zoo guest experience. Surveyors engage directly with guests as they exit the park, administering questionnaires that help the Zoo better understand visitor perspectives, evaluate educational programming, and strengthen conservation messaging. This work plays a vital part in ensuring the Zoo continues to create meaningful experiences that inspire conservation action and awareness.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
*Approach and engage Zoo guests in a friendly, confident, and professional manner.
*Conduct surveys according to established CES protocols and procedures.
*Use a tablet and survey software to accurately record guest responses.
*Maintain working knowledge of all relevant survey procedures, policies, and expectations.
*Communicate clearly and effectively with guests while representing the Zoo's mission and values.
*Exercise good judgment, patience, and situational awareness when interacting with a wide variety of audiences.
*Work independently while remaining responsible, attentive, and mission-focused.
*Stand or remain stationed outdoors in varying weather conditions while conducting surveys.
*Assist with additional duties and support CES initiatives as needed or assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Recruitment Range: $15.00 per hour

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:
Management Prefers
  • Experience engaging with the public in roles such as administering surveys, public speaking, educational programming, or other guest-facing interactions. Experience using tablets or digital tools for data collection is also preferred, as well as any background in public engagement or the ability to speak additional languages (e.g., Spanish).

Position & Physical Requirements
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Available to work a consistent schedule of five days per week, including weekends and holidays, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. through the end of November.
  • Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions typical of Central NC (heat, rain, or cold) while standing or remaining stationary for extended periods.
  • Able to walk or stand on various surfaces for extended periods, with or without accommodation.
  • Possesses sufficient cognitive ability, auditory and visual acuity, and communication skills to perform essential duties and follow general safety practices for guests and staff.
  • Willing and able to work independently in a responsible and effective manner.
  • Able to support special events or additional CES needs as assigned.
  • Able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, reaching, standing, walking, and lifting or carrying up to 30 lbs.
  • Able to navigate paved, rough, or uneven pathways.
  • Must comply with the NC Zoo Dress Code and Appearance Policy.

Minimum Education and Experience
Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience."   • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

  • At least two months of experience working with a variety of audiences in roles such as camp counselor, educator, restaurant or retail employee, customer-service representative, or any position involving public interaction.
