Job description

Position Summary: Cuts, stains, mounts and studies specimens of human tissue to provide data on the functioning of tissues and organs, causes and/or progress of disease. Prepares microscopic slides for diagnostic purposes, performs diagnostic tests, maintains laboratory equipment and records following established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  1. Prepares and stains specimens of human body tissue according to established procedures.
  2. Prepares solutions, performs special mountings and stains and performs related service duties.
  3. Processes multiple tissue types by embedding, microtomy, frozen section, IHC and special stains.
  4. Operates, calibrates, prepares and maintains equipment for all types of tissue processing and labeling, recording and verifying the quality of slides for microscopic evaluation.
  5. Applies knowledge of histopathological techniques and tissue morphology.
  6. Applies knowledge of tissue morphology to identify gross lesions ad to identify correct bedding, sectioning, and staining relations.
  7. Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  8. Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  9. Provides medical technology information by answering questions and requests.
  10. Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
  11. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  12. Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.

13. Performs other related duties as required and directed.
Lead Essential Functions and Responsibilities (If classified in a Lead Role):
1. Assists in quality control and performance improvement activities.
2. Contributes to performance feedback, hiring decisions.
3. Ensures standards are met (quality, timeliness, customer service, etc.).
4. Evaluates and tests new procedures/processes.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Baccalaureate degree in the biological sciences, chemistry or in medical technology, or completion of an accredited histotechnology (HTL) program.

• Certified as a Histotechnologist within 18 months of hire or transfer.
