What is a Connection Design job?

A Connection Design job involves designing and analyzing structural connections, primarily for steel structures, to ensure strength, stability, and code compliance. Engineers in this role create detailed connection calculations, select appropriate bolts and welds, and produce fabrication drawings. They work closely with fabricators, detailers, and structural engineers to optimize designs for efficiency and constructability. Knowledge of industry standards, materials, and structural analysis software is essential.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Connection Design engineer?

As a Connection Design engineer, your day-to-day tasks generally include developing detailed connection drawings and calculations, coordinating with project managers, fabricators, and architects, and reviewing shop drawings for accuracy and compliance. You will also address technical queries from construction teams, troubleshoot design challenges, and ensure all connection designs meet safety standards and building codes. The role often requires balancing multiple projects and deadlines, offering variety and the opportunity to develop strong project management skills. Effective collaboration and communication are key, as much of your work involves integrating input from various stakeholders to deliver successful structural solutions.
