We are seeking Kirundi Over-the-Phone Interpreters (OPI) to support our USCIS contract. Kirundi, a Bantu language spoken in Burundi and neighboring countries (Tanzania, DR Congo, Rwanda), is a rare but important East African language often needed for asylum and immigration cases.
Responsibilities
  • Provide real-time Kirundi ↔ English telephonic interpretation for USCIS interviews, hearings, and asylum proceedings.
  • Interpret with accuracy, neutrality, and professionalism in sensitive immigration and legal contexts.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with USCIS/DHS interpreter ethics standards.
  • Handle both scheduled assignments and urgent/surge interpretation requests.
  • Participate in compliance training, QA audits, and professional development.
Qualifications
  • Native or near-native fluency in Kirundi and English (knowledge of Kinyarwanda is a plus, as they are closely related).
  • 2+ years of professional interpreting experience (immigration, asylum, legal, NGO, medical, or community preferred).
  • Strong understanding of interpreter ethics, confidentiality, and impartiality.
  • Cultural familiarity with Burundian and East African contexts.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident eligible for Tier 3/Tier 5 federal clearance.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive pay: $28–35/hour (rare-language premium).
  • Remote work through secure USCIS-approved platforms.
  • Paid training and professional development.
  • Consistent workload under a federal contract.
  • Advancement opportunities in quality assurance or linguist leadership.

Submit the following:
  1. Resume / CV highlighting Kirundi interpreting experience.
  2. Certifications (community, court, medical, NGO interpreting credentials preferred).
