What are conflicts in a law firm?

Conflicts in a law firm refer to situations where a lawyer or the firm represents clients whose interests may be adverse to each other, creating a potential ethical or legal problem. Law firms have conflict-checking procedures to identify and manage these issues before accepting new clients or matters. Managing conflicts is essential to maintain client confidentiality, avoid breaches of duty, and comply with professional conduct rules. Failure to properly address conflicts can result in disciplinary action or legal liability for the firm.

What are some typical challenges conflicts analysts face when working in a law firm environment?

Conflicts Analysts in law firms often navigate the complex task of identifying and resolving potential conflicts of interest among clients, which requires strong attention to detail and the ability to interpret legal documents accurately. They must work closely with attorneys and other staff to gather information quickly, especially under tight deadlines when new cases or clients are onboarded. Balancing confidentiality with the need for thorough investigation can be challenging, and analysts must stay updated on firm policies and legal regulations to ensure compliance. Collaboration and effective communication across departments are essential to address issues efficiently and support the firm's ethical standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a conflicts analyst in a law firm, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Conflicts Analyst in a law firm, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of legal ethics and procedures, often supported by a bachelor's degree in law, paralegal studies, or a related field. Familiarity with conflicts management software (such as Intapp or Elite), legal research databases, and document management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, discretion, and problem-solving abilities help you clarify issues and interact with attorneys and staff effectively. These skills are crucial for ensuring compliance, protecting client confidentiality, and preventing legal or ethical conflicts within the firm.

Location: U.S. East Coast (Hybrid โ€“ NY / CT)

Law Firm: Regional Powerhouse (AmLaw100)

Salary: $280,000 - $350,000

Weโ€™re partnering with a globally recognized law firmโ€”consistently advising ultra-high-net-worth individuals, institutions, and complex cross-border mattersโ€”to identify a senior leader to build and scale their U.S. Risk & Compliance function. This is not a maintenance role. This is a build mandate with real influence across leadership, operations, and firmwide strategy.

The Opportunity

You will act as the lead voice for Risk & Compliance across the U.S., partnering directly with international leadership and key stakeholders across Legal, Finance, and Operations.

This role sits at the intersection of:

  • Firm strategy & governance
  • Regulatory compliance & ethics
  • Operational execution & risk mitigation

Youโ€™ll lead a team, influence partners, and shape how a global platform manages risk at scale.

What Youโ€™ll Own

  • Lead all U.S. Risk & Compliance operations, including conflicts, NBI, and engagement governance
  • Design and implement firmwide risk strategy aligned with global leadership
  • Oversee complex conflicts resolution, ethical screens, and high-risk matter approvals
  • Partner with senior stakeholders on claims, regulatory, and reputational risk matters
  • Drive process improvement, policy development, and system optimization
  • Lead training initiatives across attorneys and business teams
  • Act as a strategic advisor on lateral hires, office expansions, and sensitive matters

Requirements

  • JD + active U.S. bar admission
  • 6โ€“10+ years in law firm risk, compliance, OGC, or professional responsibility
  • Deep expertise in:
  • Conflicts & new business intake
  • Engagement terms / waiver strategy
  • Ethical screens & information barriers
  • Proven ability to influence partners and operate at the leadership level
  • Strong operator mindset: you donโ€™t just adviseโ€”you build, implement, and improve

Why This Role

  • Direct exposure to global leadership across U.S., Europe, and APAC
  • Opportunity to build and modernize a critical function
  • High-impact seat at the table on firmwide decision-making
  • Platform with elite clientele and complex, high-stakes work
