Configuration Management Manager information

What does a Configuration Management Manager do?

A Configuration Management Manager oversees the processes and tools used to track and control changes in software, hardware, documentation, and other key assets throughout a project's lifecycle. They ensure that all systems remain consistent, reliable, and well-documented by implementing configuration management policies and procedures. Their responsibilities often include managing configuration databases, leading audits, and coordinating with different teams to maintain the integrity of products or systems. This role is critical in industries like IT, engineering, and manufacturing, where maintaining accurate records and version control is essential for quality and compliance.

What are some common challenges Configuration Management Managers face when implementing new processes across teams?

Configuration Management Managers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from team members, ensuring consistent adoption of new tools, and maintaining accurate records across multiple departments. They must coordinate closely with engineering, IT, and quality assurance teams to standardize processes while accommodating unique project needs. Effective communication, training programs, and regular audits are essential to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring smooth integration of new configuration management practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Configuration Management Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Configuration Management Manager, you need expertise in configuration management processes, change control, and a relevant technical or engineering background, often supported by a bachelor’s degree or industry certifications like ITIL or CMII. Familiarity with configuration management tools such as ServiceNow, Jira, or IBM Rational, and experience with standards like ISO 9001 or CMMI, are typically required. Strong leadership, organizational skills, and attention to detail, alongside effective communication, make someone stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring system integrity, minimizing errors, and supporting efficient project delivery in complex technical environments.

Job Description

Req ID 1004722
Title/ Designation ILMT Migration SME
Client Hennepin County, MN
Duration of Contract 880 hours
Interview Type In Person preferred
Location A1900 Government Center
300 South 6th Street
Minneapolis, MN 55487-0190

Qualifications

Hennepin County seeks to migrate it's version of IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT). This is a full migration from version 7.5 to version 9.x (this is currently version 9.2). Due to a change in the underlying infrastructure, a simple upgrade from version 7.5 to version 9.x is not possible. The migration does not transfer raw data or scan results from version 7.x, but rather configuration information related to the specific environment. This process requires a parallel run of version 9.x and version 7.5 with existing agents until verification of version 9.x is complete.
The selected candidate will become a member of the ILMT Migration project team and serve as a technical and process expert across all phases of the project including: analysis, design, build, test, and rollout. They will also be responsible for leading discussions and maintaining project documentation.
Description of Work to Be Performed and the Specific Skill Sets Needed:
Experience migrating IBM License Metric Tool from version 7.5 to version 9.x.
Lead Hennepin County effort to upgrade from ILMT version 7.5 to version 9.x.
Collaborate with Hennepin County quality assurance staff to develop a test plan, write test cases, and analyze defects.
Advise Hennepin County enterprise architects and technical staff on system requirements and configuration
List of Deliverables:
Migration plan
Technical decision log - to capture why configuration choices were made
Future upgrade plan
Decommission plan for version 7.5
Operations manual (covering tasks for system users and administrators)
Training for system users and administrators
Impact/Outcome from a Business Perspective:
This migration will allow the generation of reports necessary to demonstrate compliance for systems currently running the appropriate agent. It will also provide an accurate picture to enable the management of licenses. Migration will put us on supported software (support for ILMT version 7.5 ends in April 2017), in addition to meeting the terms and conditions of our Passport Advantage agreement with IBM.
