Job description

ZTEX Construction is a heavy civil contractor specializing in earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, underground utilities and overall project management. We are locally owned, and we are currently looking to fill a Rodbuster/Rebar position.


Rod Buster/Rebar Workers cut and shape reinforcing bars and mesh so that they can be installed in concrete forms, along with fasteners and anchor points for reinforcement and utility. These reinforced concrete forms act as frameworks for setting concrete and add strength and stability to finished concrete structures such as foundations, walls, and columns. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable, energetic, positive, proactive, willing to learn and grow with the company, and overall be a team player.


Duties and Responsibilities

This list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.

  • Examine blueprints and specifications to determine dimensions of structure.
  • Determine quantities, sizes, shapes, and locations of reinforcing rods from blueprints, sketches, or oral instructions.
  • Space and fasten together rods in forms according to blueprints, using wire and pliers.
  • Securing and positioning steel bars in concrete forms.
  • Position and secure steel bars, rods, cables, or mesh in concrete forms, using fasteners, rod-bending machines, blowtorches, or hand tools.
  • Cut rods to required lengths, using metal shears, hacksaws, bar cutters, or acetylene torches.
  • Place blocks under rebar to hold the bars off the deck when reinforcing floors.
  • Inspecting equipment for damage, wear, or defects and making repairs as necessary.
  • Use machines, tools, and blowtorches to shape steel rods for use in projects.
  • Installing, handling, positioning, and manipulating steel rods for concrete foundation or framing.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the appropriate use of hand tools, (example; pliers, cutting torch, welding, reading a tape measure, fasteners etc. all).
  • Knowledge of rod-bending machines and equipment.
  • Knowledge of installation of reinforcing steel at different heights.
  • Knowledge of rigging and signal communications.
  • Knowledge of CAD Software.
  • Ability to work at considerable heights above or below the ground, with fall protection measures in place and move forward, backward, and sideways directions of movement.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend or crouch over narrow work surfaces for the placement of reinforcing steel.
  • Ability to balance on reinforced steel structures (example; wall forms) and ladders, while performing lifting activities and manual work (example; rebar mats)
  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing both in English & Spanish.
  • Ability to safely move and relocate heavy objects.
  • Ability to work in confined areas.
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
  • Ability to coordinate and adjust action in relation to other actions.
  • Ability to use logic, think critically and reason to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusion, or approaches to problems.
  • Possess physical and mental stamina to work on heights or elevated decks, climb high structure and understand fall protection tie off points and rigging, commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.


Education, Training and Experience

  • High school graduation or other equivalent (i.e., General Educational Development (GED), foreign equivalency, etc.)
  • 2 years minimum of Rodbuster/ Rebar Worker experience
  • OSHA 10/30 preferred
  • Minimum Required Tool List:
  • o    1 each Tool Pouch
    o    1 each Claw Hammer
    o    1 each 12” Crescent Wrench
    o    1 each Tape Measure
    o    1 each Speed Square
    o    1 each 2’ and 4’ Level
    o    1 each Wire Pliers
    o    1 each Chalk Box
    o    1 each Torpedo Level


Physical Requirements:

This position performs strenuous physical activity, for long periods, under varying and adverse field conditions. This position must be able to lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs., stand, walk on uneven surfaces, manually manipulate, grasp, reach out and above shoulder, climb, kneel, bend, twist, and push/pull. Vision: Frequent near acuity, depth perception, and color vision.


Environmental Conditions:

Work is performed outside in all types of environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.


Additional Qualifying Factors

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical screening. If applicable to the contract, you may also be required to submit through a background check. Must have reliable transportation to/from work, must have a valid driver's license at time of application.
