Job Summary

The Fence Installation Apprentice participates in a structured three-year apprenticeship program designed to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience required to become a Journeyman Fence Installer. Apprentices progress annually by completing required coursework, classroom hours, and supervised field hours. Under the guidance of Journeymen and Field Leaders, apprentices learn safe work practices, tool operation, installation techniques, and jobsite responsibilities.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Throughout Years 1–3, apprentices will progressively:
  • Assist with loading, unloading, and staging materials for daily job assignments
  • Prepare job sites, including digging post holes, mixing concrete, and setting materials
  • Learn and operate hand tools and power tools safely and effectively
  • Support installation of posts, panels, gates, and hardware
  • Read and interpret measurements, site layouts, and installation instructions
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe job sites
  • Follow all company safety policies and wear required PPE
  • Participate in classroom instruction, hands-on training, and skill evaluations
  • Demonstrate increasing independence and proficiency each year
  • Support and model safe practices for newer apprentices as they advance


Apprenticeship Program Requirements:

To advance from one year to the next, apprentices must:

  • Complete required coursework for each program year
  • Complete required classroom training hours
  • Complete required supervised field hours
  • Demonstrate competency in skills outlined for each year
  • Maintain reliable attendance and positive work performance
  • Show progress toward Journeyman-level readiness

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • No experience required for Year 1; construction experience helpful
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a crew
  • Willingness to learn, complete coursework, and develop trade skills
  • Reliable transportation to job sites
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to safety

Physical Requirements

  • Lift 50–80 lbs regularly
  • Perform repetitive physical tasks including digging, lifting, bending, and carrying
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, uneven terrain)
  • Stand, walk, and perform manual labor for extended periods

Career Path

Successful completion of the three-year apprenticeship program prepares individuals for promotion to:

Journeyman 1 – Entry Journeyman

and continued advancement through the Journeyman levels.
