Position Summary

The Stagehand is a skilled technical theater professional responsible for the safe and efficient execution of all physical production elements for performances, events, and rehearsals at Platform. Working under the direction of the Technical Director and department heads, the Stagehand supports load-ins, performances, and load-outs across a variety of productions including music concerts, dance, and special events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Stage Operations

  • Participate in all aspects of load-in, technical rehearsals, performances, and load-outs
  • Construct, install, strike, and store scenic elements, soft goods, and rigging systems
  • Operate fly systems, counterweight rigging, and motorized hoists in accordance with safety protocols
  • Execute scene changes and run crew assignments during live performances
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized stage environment at all times

Lighting

  • Hang, focus, and circuit stage lighting fixtures as directed by the Head Electrician
  • Assist with the installation and troubleshooting of dimming systems, LED fixtures, and followspots
  • Operate manual followspots during performances as assigned

Audio

  • Assist with placement and running of microphone cables, speaker systems, and audio snakes
  • Support A1 and A2 personnel during load-in, sound checks, and performances
  • Operate wireless microphone systems or monitor mixes as directed

Carpentry & Properties

  • Assist in loading in, strike, and maintenance of marley dance floors.
  • Assist in the construction, painting, and finishing of scenic elements
  • Move, set, and strike properties and furniture according to production plots
  • Perform minor repairs and adjustments to scenic units and set pieces

General

  • Attend all required calls including production meetings, tech rehearsals, and notes sessions
  • Adhere to all venue safety policies, OSHA standards, and union rules where applicable
  • Operate and maintain production equipment including forklifts, lifts, and power tools (with proper certifications)
  • Communicate effectively with department heads and fellow crew members
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Technical Director or Production Manager

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 2+ years of professional stagehand or technical theater experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of stagecraft, rigging principles, and theatrical production
  • Ability to read and interpret ground plans, light plots, and rigging designs
  • Strong physical stamina; ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs occasionally
  • Comfort working at heights on ladders, catwalks, and aerial lifts
  • Availability for irregular hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Helpful

  • Experience in a professional performing arts center, concert hall, or touring production environment
  • ETCP Certification in Theatrical Rigging or Arena Rigging
  • Forklift and/or aerial lift (scissor/boom) certification
  • Working knowledge of industry-standard consoles (ETC Ion, Yamaha audio, etc.)
  • First Aid / CPR certification

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs, work at heights (catwalks, ladders, lifts), stand or walk for extended periods, and work in variable lighting and sound environments. Reasonable accommodations will be made in accordance with applicable law.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a performing arts facility environment with regular exposure to loud sound levels. The schedule varies significantly based on the performance calendar and may include extended hours, nights and weekends, during load-ins, technical rehearsals, and production runs. Some travel may be required for site visits, training, or industry conferences.

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with an annual salary of $60,000. Benefits include health, dental, disability and life insurance; SIMPLE Cafeteria flexible spending account; paid vacation, sick, and personal days; and 10 paid holidays.
