How much do computer vision research jobs pay per hour?
What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Computer Vision Research?
One of the main challenges in Computer Vision Research is dealing with the complexity and variability of real-world data, such as inconsistent lighting, occlusions, or image noise, which can make model development and testing difficult. Researchers also frequently need to stay updated with rapidly evolving algorithms and technologies while managing computational resource constraints. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and conveying technical findings to non-experts are important and sometimes challenging aspects of the job. Overcoming these challenges is essential for driving innovation and bringing cutting-edge vision applications to practical use.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computer Vision Research position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Computer Vision Research, you need a strong background in mathematics, machine learning, and image processing, usually supported by a graduate degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or C++, deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, and experience with relevant certifications or published research is highly valued. Critical thinking, collaboration, and clear communication are essential soft skills in this role. These skills enable researchers to develop innovative solutions, share insights effectively, and drive progress in advancing computer vision technologies.
What is a Computer Vision Research job?
A Computer Vision Research job involves developing and improving algorithms that enable computers to interpret and analyze visual data from the world. Researchers in this field work on areas such as image recognition, object detection, and scene understanding using techniques from machine learning and deep learning. They experiment with datasets, design novel architectures, and publish findings to advance the state of the art in computer vision. These roles are commonly found in industries like healthcare, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and augmented reality.

Job Description
Reporting to the VP of AI for Motorola Solutions, the Principal Product Manager - Computer Vision will be a critical, high-impact leader who thrives on turning highly ambiguous concepts into enterprise-scale Computer Vision solutions. They will be responsible for defining and driving the strategy, roadmap, and measurable success of our core Computer Vision Platform. This role is pivotal in partnering with internal product leaders to define the platform's requirements and drive the adoption of central AI models and foundational AI infrastructure across Motorola's product portfolio. This includes product management for our enterprise-scale cloud and edge AI platforms, ensuring our AI investments translate into quantifiable, improved customer and business outcomes. This role also includes product ownership for select end-to-end computer vision-based products.
Key Responsibilities
The Principal Product Manager will own the strategy, definition, and roadmap across the following core areas, with an emphasis on the Computer Vision Platform:
- Platform Product Strategy & Roadmap: Define the vision, strategy and roadmap for the Computer Vision Platform, ensuring alignment with Motorola Solutions' overall product portfolio and strategic business goals.
- Internal Partner Management & Alignment: Serve as the primary product leader for the platform, engaging with internal product leaders and teams across Motorola to understand their computer vision needs, define platform requirements (APIs, capabilities, scalability), and drive adoption of platform services.
- Product Definition & Requirements: Author high-quality Market Requirements Documents (MRDs), Product Requirements Documents (PRDs), and user stories for core platform capabilities (e.g., model serving, data pipelines, edge-to-cloud synchronization) and for select end-to-end computer vision products.
- AI Model Lifecycle Ownership: Own the product lifecycle for central, reusable computer vision models and foundational AI infrastructure, from ideation and research collaboration through deployment, adoption, and deprecation.
- Platform Success Metrics: Define, implement, and track key business, customer, and technical metrics (e.g., platform adoption, performance, latency, cost-efficiency, and quantifiable customer outcomes) to measure the success and health of the platform and drive continuous improvement.
- Market & Customer Insights: Conduct market research, competitive analysis, and customer/partner discovery to identify new opportunities, validate product concepts, and inform strategic build-versus-buy decisions.
Qualifications & Experience
- 10+ years of product management experience, with a focus on platform products, AI/ML, or complex, cross-functional technical domains.
- Technical Acumen: Deep understanding of computer vision and machine learning, machine learning lifecycle (MLOps), data platforms, and the challenges of building and deploying central, reusable AI infrastructure and models. Demonstrated ability to engage in technical discussions with engineering teams, understand architectural trade-offs, and define clear, measurable product requirements.
- Product Strategy & Metrics: Proven experience defining product vision, strategy, and roadmaps. Expertise in defining and implementing metrics frameworks (KPIs, OKRs) to measure product success (adoption, revenue, customer value) and drive organizational change and accountability.
- Strong analytical skills, with experience working with AI performance metrics (e.g., Precision/Recall), real-time video processing, and inference optimization.
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to operate at a Principal level, influence senior leaders across organizations, drive consensus, and communicate complex technical and strategic concepts clearly and concisely, including presenting roadmap elements and business cases.
- Customer-focused with a track record of building strong relationships and conducting early-stage discovery to understand internal and external customer needs.
- Domain Knowledge:Experience in public safety, security-focused software (e.g., video security, evidence management), mission-critical systems, or emergency communications is a plus.
Pathfinding: Experience bringing initial definition to "highly ambiguous" product concepts and conducting early-stage discovery for emergent initiatives.
Target Base Salary Range: $220,000 USD - $250,000 USD
