What are some typical challenges faced in Computer System Validation roles?

Professionals in Computer System Validation often encounter challenges such as keeping up with evolving regulatory requirements, ensuring complete and accurate documentation, and coordinating with cross-functional teams to implement validation protocols. Balancing thoroughness with project deadlines can also be demanding, as every validation step must stand up to external audits. However, these challenges provide valuable experience, strengthen project management abilities, and emphasize teamwork—key attributes that support career advancement into validation leadership or quality assurance roles.

What is a Computer System Validation job?

A Computer System Validation (CSV) job involves ensuring that computer systems used in regulated industries, such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices, meet compliance and regulatory requirements. CSV professionals develop and execute validation protocols to confirm that software, hardware, and processes function as intended and maintain data integrity. They work with quality assurance, IT, and regulatory teams to document compliance with standards like FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and GxP. This role is critical in maintaining system reliability, product quality, and patient safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computer System Validation position, and why are they important?

To excel in Computer System Validation, candidates typically need a background in computer science, engineering, or life sciences, with expertise in validating software and systems in regulated environments such as pharmaceuticals or medical devices. Familiarity with tools like validation documentation software, GAMP 5 guidelines, FDA 21 CFR Part 11 regulations, and potentially certifications like CSV Professional or Six Sigma is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help professionals work collaboratively and document findings precisely. These abilities ensure compliance, data integrity, and the reliability of computerized systems critical to safety and quality.

What is the work of computer system validation?

Computer System Validation (CSV) is the process of ensuring that computer systems used in regulated environments function correctly and comply with industry standards. It involves documenting and testing software, hardware, and related processes to verify they meet specified requirements, often using validation protocols and tools. CSV is essential in industries like pharmaceuticals and healthcare to ensure data integrity and regulatory compliance.

What degree is best for cis jobs?

For Computer System Validation (CSV) roles, a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, life sciences, or engineering is typically preferred. Relevant certifications such as GxP or validation-specific training can enhance job prospects, and strong knowledge of regulatory requirements like FDA or EMA guidelines is beneficial.

What is the salary of SoC validation engineer?

The salary of a SoC validation engineer typically ranges from $80,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Professionals in this role often have skills in hardware description languages and verification tools, which can influence compensation.

Job description

WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING

At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences—from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. Grounded in a culture of innovation and collaboration, we believe real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity and a shared passion to create something extraordinary. When you join AMD, you’ll discover the real differentiator is our culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world’s most important challenges—striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond.  Together, we advance your career.

THE ROLE:
Join a high-impact firmware validation team working on cutting-edge AMD EPYC CPUs and Instinct GPUs powering next-generation data center and enterprise platforms. In this role, you will help shape how firmware is validated across both pre-silicon (simulation) and post-silicon environments by building scalable, automation-ready test solutions. You’ll collaborate closely with firmware architects, SoC design teams, and validation engineers to define test strategies, improve coverage, and ensure system reliability from boot through runtime. This is a highly collaborative environment where you’ll gain exposure to end-to-end platform behavior while driving innovative approaches to testing, including modern automation techniques and AI-assisted tooling. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of hardware and firmware, influence validation methodologies, and contribute to the success of complex server-class platforms at scale.

THE PERSON:
You are a hands-on problem solver who enjoys digging into low-level system behavior and building reliable, repeatable test solutions. You thrive in a collaborative environment and communicate effectively across cross-functional teams. You take pride in creating clear, actionable debug artifacts and are motivated to close gaps quickly through data-driven decisions. You are naturally curious, challenge the status quo, and look for smarter, more efficient ways to validate complex systems. You bring a strong sense of ownership and are excited to continuously learn and innovate, including exploring new tooling and automation approaches.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Define and implement firmware test strategies in partnership with architects and cross-functional teams
• Design and develop end-to-end test flows validating firmware across boot and runtime environments
• Build automation-ready test solutions that run in both simulation (pre-silicon) and hardware (post-silicon) environments
• Analyze feature-level verification requirements and develop test plans for next-generation platforms
• Execute tests, debug failures, and collaborate with firmware teams to drive defect resolution
• Generate high-quality debug artifacts (logs, register dumps, system captures) to support efficient triage
• Contribute to improving simulation environments to enable broader pre-silicon validation coverage
• Enhance test infrastructure to improve coverage, execution efficiency, and reporting workflows

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in firmware, software development, or system validation/test development
• Strong foundation in computer architecture and server platform features
• Hands-on experience with SoC validation, system bring-up, or low-level debugging
• Experience developing tests for pre-silicon environments and working with simulation/emulation platforms (e.g., Simics or similar)
• Proficiency in C/C++ and scripting with Python, Perl, or Bash
• Experience or exposure to one or more of the following:

  • BIOS / UEFI concepts (ACPI, SMBIOS, DXE)
  • RAS features and validation
  • Memory subsystem validation
  • Power management and telemetry
  • Platform security (TPM, Secure Boot, SPDM, etc.)
  • Virtualization technologies (SR-IOV, ACPI)
  • High-speed I/O (PCIe, CXL)
  • Sideband protocols (MCTP, PLDM, SPDM, etc.)

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science.

LOCATION: Markham On or Austin TX
